Built Right: Tile Prep Matters

Beautiful tile starts long before the first piece is laid.

The proper way to install tile is to make sure the floor is prepared correctly from the beginning. That means sanding down uneven areas, checking the joints, making sure there are no humps, and creating a level surface before the tile work begins.

Not everyone takes these extra steps.

On this project, the homeowner had originally chosen to use someone else for the tile work. The floor was not properly sanded and checked before installation. After the tile was laid, a hump was noticed in the master bathroom.

The tile — including the heated floor — had to be removed so the floor could be re-done correctly.

Ron and his tile contractor spent time going over the layout and direction of the tile before it is re-laid. They will also be using Schluter-DITRA underlayment on the floor as part of the installation process.

Because when the prep, planning, layout, and materials are handled correctly, the finished result has a much better chance of being right the first time.

That is expensive, frustrating, and avoidable.

And it is exactly why building right matters.
