If your cucumbers are flowering but not producing fruit yet, don’t panic! 🥒

Cucumber plants often produce male flowers first, which do not turn into cucumbers. Female flowers usually show up a little later and have a tiny cucumber-shaped swelling behind the bloom. If you have female flowers but no fruit, poor pollination may be the issue.

Encourage pollinators by planting flowers nearby, avoiding sprays when bees are active, and giving plants steady water. Once pollinators find your cucumber blooms, fruit should follow soon.

Fresh harvests and meaningful moments from the garden ❤️

We love seeing the garden program at Via Cognitive Health in action. Via Cognitive Health is a local Augusta-area nonprofit that offers research-based day programming for individuals diagnosed with cognitive decline disorders, including Alzheimer’s. Their programming encourages mental and physical exercise, socialization, and meaningful engagement to help support cognitive function for longer.

Gardening is such a beautiful way to connect, move, learn, and celebrate the joy of growing something from seed to table.

Wondering why pests are suddenly showing up in your garden? 🐛

By mid-spring, temperatures are warming up, plants are putting on tender new growth, and insects are becoming more active. Young leaves, stressed plants, crowded spacing, weeds, and inconsistent watering can all make your garden more inviting to pests.

The best thing you can do is check your plants often, especially the undersides of leaves. Catching damage early makes it much easier to manage before pests take over.

Ready for the real world… now what? 🌿

Once your seedlings have strong roots and a few sets of true leaves, it’s time to transplant—but don’t rush it.

Start by hardening them off: gradually introduce them to outdoor sun and wind over 5–7 days.

When you’re ready to plant, choose a cloudy day or evening to reduce stress. Gently loosen roots, plant at the proper depth, and water well.

Keep an eye on them the first few days—this is when they need you most.

Your live plants just arrived… now what? 🌿

Start by getting them out of the box and into a bright, shaded spot. If the soil feels dry, give them a light watering.

Most plants—like fruit plants, pepper plants, and sweet potato slips—benefit from a day or two to rest, then gradually adjust to outdoor sun before planting.

Onion slips are the exception—they can go straight in the ground.

Once planted, water well and give them time to establish.

👉 A strong start now means a better harvest later.
