Here are some ways you can help your yard, your neighborhood and the earth, and how to have a more sustainable yard during droughts.
To landscape during a drought, replace thirsty lawns with xeriscaping, using drought-tolerant native plants, succulents, and ornamental grasses that require minimal water. Key strategies include applying organic mulch to retain soil moisture, utilizing drip irrigation for targeted watering, and incorporating hardscaping like gravel paths, boulders, and pavers to reduce water needs.
*xeriscaping- this is a type of landscape that requires little to no irrigation by using native plants suited to dry conditions
*hydrozoning- grouping plants of similar water needs together.
*mulch- 2-4 inches to reduce evaporation and suppress w**ds.
*drip irrigation- replace sprinklers with drip system or soaker hoses to water the roots directly and reduce evaporation
*soil improvement- amend soil with compost to improve water retention.
*turf- replace sod with artificial turf to reduce the need for water and maintance
