When I arrived in a Granada, the locals were holding a protest against mass tourism. I was caught between the crowds walking to my hotel. I can tell you: it was scary. Some protesters were peaceful and others were on the aggressive side, no one was touching anyone but it was still scary. Now, in Barcelona they held the same protest but they went further by squirting tourists with water guns, shouting on their faces. This sentiment against mass tourism is spreading fast. People in Paris were angry too. So was the locals in Porto. The short term rental take over (AirBnB) hasn’t helped, making expensive for locals to rent a local apartment as they’re not available for long term rent. When I was in Seville there was talk about charging to visit certain areas of the City. Bhutan is already charging $100 a day for tourists to visit. Fernando de Noronha in Brazil has charged extra money per day for tourists to visit the island as long as I know myself, so they can curb mass tourism destroying the eco system of the island. Soon, tourism will be a thing of the rich.
