Two of the most common problems our clients struggle with here in Austin are drainage and shade. They often go hand in hand, each causing the other to get worse over time. Our shallow soil and heavy rains can quickly cause issues with compaction and erosion, especially in shaded areas where it's harder to grow grass or other plants that can secure the soil in place. These clients were experiencing all of these issues in spades. Even in lighter rains, their back yard turned into a lake.. Standing water took too long to drain which encouraged mud and mosquitos and killed off what little grass remained.
What they wanted was a comfortable place to spend time outdoors with their dog and grandkids, to work in the garden, and to entertain family and friends in a comfortable and welcoming setting that reflected who they are and how they live - an extension of their indoor space.
Our solution was to regrade the back yard, adding a catch drain in the lowest spot to get any extra water out of there. We added structure with edging and gravel to control water flow and hold the soil, new sod in the sunnier areas, and wrapped it all around with native and adapted plantings that love shade.
Over time, root growth from the new plantings will improve the soil's capacity to absorb water, will improve soil health, and will hold the soil in place. Without a flood of water to drown it, the grass will be able to thrive and grow, doing the same things in the lawn area.
Now, these clients have a balanced and sustainable back yard ecosystem that will continue to improve over time.
