Let’s clear something up…

“Synthetic underlayment is better because you can’t rip it.”

That’s not actually the main reason.

Nobody is climbing on your roof trying to rip underlayment. 😂

The REAL reasons every roof should have synthetic underlayment:

👉 Better water resistance
👉 Doesn’t absorb moisture like felt paper
👉 Doesn’t become brittle over time
👉 Provides safer footing for installers
👉 Helps reduce water intrusion if shingles are damaged or blown off

Here’s the big one:

Because of the way it’s woven, if a nail pulls out during a storm, the opening is often smaller than traditional felt products.

Less opening = less opportunity for water.

Synthetic underlayment isn’t an upgrade anymore.

It’s the standard.

One of the most common things homeowners hear during a roof replacement is:

“We’re upgrading you to synthetic underlayment.”

But what does that actually mean?

And more importantly…

Why does it matter?

Many contractors focus on one selling point:

“You can’t rip synthetic underlayment.”

While that’s true, it’s not the primary reason roofing professionals use it today.

The real benefits are:

• Improved water resistance
• Reduced moisture absorption compared to felt paper
• Better durability over time
• Improved walkability and safety during installation
• Better protection when shingles become damaged or blow off during severe weather

One of the lesser-known advantages is how the woven material reacts around fasteners.

If a nail pulls out during a windstorm, the material often leaves a tighter opening compared to traditional felt underlayment, helping limit water intrusion until repairs can be made.

The reality is simple:

Synthetic underlayment shouldn’t be considered a premium upgrade anymore.

It should be considered the minimum standard for a professionally installed roofing system.

At Cool Roofs, we believe homeowners deserve to understand the “why” behind the materials being installed on their home—not just the marketing language.

A roof isn’t finished when the shingles go on.

It’s finished when the property is safer than when we arrived.

This beautiful home in Beaumont is getting a new CertainTeed Weathered Wood roof, but one of the most important parts of the project happens at the very end.

👉 Full debris removal
👉 Magnetic nail sweep of the entire property
👉 Final safety inspection

Because the last thing we want is a homeowner finding roofing nails where their kids play or where their tires roll.

A quality roof isn’t just about installation.

It’s about respecting the home, the property, and the family that lives there.

That’s the Cool Roofs standard.

Let’s talk about safety.

Because a great roof means nothing if the crew behind it isn’t protected.

Out here in Germantown, Tennessee, safety isn’t optional:
👉 Anchored ridge-line rope systems
👉 Proper fall protection
👉 Controlled movement on steep systems

Why?

Because high standards apply to more than just the roof.

They apply to the people building it too.

Another build day in Ingleside, Texas 🔥

This homeowner is getting a full impact-resistant CertainTeed Landmark roofing system:
👉 Synthetic underlayment
👉 Ice & water shield
👉 Drip edge
👉 Full material system built for Texas weather

But here’s the part most homeowners don’t realize 👇

This roof has MULTIPLE layers.

And if your contractor doesn’t properly document that with insurance…

Those extra tear-off costs could become YOUR out-of-pocket expense.

That’s why the inspection process matters just as much as the install itself.

This roof should’ve taken 2 days…

But when you’ve got two of the best crews in San Antonio, things move differently 👀

Now upgrading this entire system with:
👉 Ice & water shield
👉 Synthetic underlayment
👉 Class 4 CertainTeed Landmark shingles

This isn’t just a new roof.

It’s a stronger system built for Texas weather.

And here’s the truth most homeowners don’t hear:

If your roof is 10–15+ years old and nobody’s properly advocating for you through the insurance process…

You could be leaving a full roof replacement on the table.

Skylight tip most people don’t know 👇

Always measure from the OUTSIDE.

Not the inside.

Why?

Because skylight sizing is based on the exterior curb/opening dimensions—not the interior trim dimensions.

Measure wrong…
👉 Wrong skylight ordered
👉 Installation delays
👉 Extra costs + headaches

Little details matter.

When’s the last time your roof had a checkup? 👀

36,000 square feet in East Memphis.

And just like most commercial roofs…
the biggest problems aren’t usually obvious at first.

👉 Drainage issues
👉 Termination concerns
👉 Early signs of failure most people miss

This property is currently doing CapEx planning for a roof recovery system, and inspections like this are what help building owners make smart long-term decisions.

Maintenance isn’t optional at this size.

It’s protection.

Luxury roofing is in the details.

This standing seam panel wasn’t chosen randomly.

We specifically selected this profile because of the curved rooflines and dormers on this high-end home.

Why does that matter?

Because the wrong panel would require excessive cuts, create more transition points, and compromise both:
👉 Watertightness
👉 Aesthetics

This panel allows us to follow the curve naturally while maintaining clean lines and long-term performance.

That’s the difference:
Not just installing a roof…

Engineering a system that fits the home properly.
