Posted β€’ πŸ₯³πŸ₯³πŸ₯³Happy book birthday to MR. THATCHER'S HOUSE! It's finally out!! Sort of. 😬
Today you can find MR. THATCHER'S HOUSE on actual bookshelves at in Austin, Texas! πŸ₯³πŸ₯³πŸ₯³ It's also available on their website.
Due to shipping delays the book is currently only available in select brick-and-mortar stores. The official release day was on Sunday, but because it was delayed from its original publication date, online retailers who haven't yet received their copies are showing the book as backordered or "temporarily out of stock." The good news is shipped books out last week. They're just not arriving as quickly as expected. So this should be updated gradually as booksellers begin receiving shipments. Oh the joys of a post pandemic book release! πŸ˜†
If you happen to spot it anywhere, please let me know! If you receive a book that you preordered, I would love to know when you got it and where you ordered from. I will post updates as books start to show as β€œin stock” with different retailers.
I'm so excited for you all to have this book in your hands. THANK YOU to everyone who has taken a minute to send me a note, or leave a comment. I'm so grateful for your support. Also, it feels like this book took forever to make, so I feel that it’s only fair to celebrate like those obnoxious people who party for their entire birthday month. I think that’s a good place to start. πŸ˜œπŸ’ƒπŸ’ƒπŸ₯³πŸ₯³πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰

We are pleased to announce that MR. THATCHER'S HOUSE is finally available for PREORDER wherever books are sold! πŸ₯³πŸ₯³πŸ₯³
If you've been following us for a while, you might remember that Nick's wife/Steve's daughter-in-law Kristin wrote and illustrated a children's book based on Steve's 20+ year long ongoing house remodel.
πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰ MR. THATCHERS HOUSE, published by , hits shelves on August 15th!! πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰
It's a story about a rabbit whose plans to build the perfect house are derailed by the arrival of storybook characters who want to move in with him. He soon finds that what makes a house a home has nothing to do with craftsmanship (although we still think good craftsmanship never hurts 😏).
Preorders are important to authors, so if you’re planning to order it anyway, placing your order early really helps Kristin out. πŸ™β€οΈ
Copies are available now from Austin's favorite local bookstore .
You can also find it on , Indiebound, … even Target and of course β€œthe big store.”
Direct links to order are on Kristin's website http://kristinwauson.com/books

After years of waiting and months of work, Kristin finally turned in all the art for MR. THATCHER'S HOUSE which comes out August 15th! πŸ™ŒπŸΎ Copies are now available for preorder from Bookshop.org, your local bookseller, Barnes and Noble and of course, that really big store.
The story of a perfectionist rabbit was inspired by Steve and his never ending house project. It only seemed fitting to celebrate at the REAL Mr. Thatcher's House, with fajitas, cake and champagne, while also making use of Steve's newly finished kitchen. Don’t mind the saw horses and piles of boards in the background. 😬

What would drive a person to save framing material for 40 years? Insanity and character. Steve knew this wood would have lots of character due to the knots, nail and staple holes. He also says it takes one [character] to know one. πŸ˜†
Once the wood has been exposed to light for a few years it will turn a beautiful warm shade of red.
Steve has been fond of Douglas Fir for a long time. He says, "I often used Douglas fir as trim material building in Austin in the 80s, and in the 80s and 90’s building in Seattle, where it is quite poplar [see what he did there?]. Since returning to Austin, mid 90s, we’ve used Douglas Fir lumber whenever possible as framing material to produce a superior product."
Any left over reclaimed framing wood will be milled and used for trim material. The house will also use Douglas Fir for flooring, window and door trim, columns and beams, interior/exterior doors and the 3 story helix stairs.

A little more of the process as Steve uses that 40-year-old Douglas fir from the previous post to build his kitchen remodel.
Steve's girlfriend, Julie, was in charge of pulling the nails and staples from the old wood. Steve says, "It didn’t cost me any money, but cost me in other ways." 🀣🀣🀣 A shed was built on Julie's property to store the lumber until he was ready to use it.
Right now Steve is milling the old framing material that he saved to make kitchen cabinets. They've been ripped and planed into strips, then glued like butcher block and planed again to make cabinet parts.
The cabinet box parts have all been installed and the wood he is currently milling will become cabinet doors and drawer fronts.
Next we'll show you what it looks like installed!

Steve has made enough progress in his kitchen that it's time to do a little show and tell.β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €This pile of...

This pile of Doug Fir was removed from Steve Wauson's original house, built by J. W. Smith in 1979. Back then, J. W. Smith was building one of the better quality track homes in Austin: four-sided brick with vaulted ceilings, brick fireplaces, and framed with Douglas Fir lumber. β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
Steve saved all the framing lumber that he demoed in the course of framing his remodel and addition, knowing that he would use it one day to build his kitchen. β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
Forty years of cooking in the attic, freezing in the winter, but always staying dry made the wood crispy, harder, and richer in color. β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
Stay tuned for more photos of the process!β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β € β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €

Hi friends. We took an unscheduled break from Instagram for a bit as we wrapped up the summer and did all the back to school things.
If you have kids who started school we send our wishes for a safe and happy year. Or, if you completely forgot about school and were blindsided by the return of traffic, we send our condolences. Hang in there..

Porch columns are one of the defining features of the Craftsman style house. Steve wanted his front porch area to be something special so he gave these columns a unique design.
