The Silver Islet mining shaft, located off the coast of Ontario on Lake Superior, became one of the richest silver mines in the world when it was discovered in 1868. The mining operation was highly challenging due to its location on a tiny island, which was only about 2.5 meters above water at the time of discovery. To combat the dangerous conditions posed by the surrounding lake, the Silver Islet Mining Company, led by Alexander H. Sibley, expanded the island using crushed rock and constructed protective breakwaters.
The mine reached depths of 384 meters below the lake surface, and during its 16 years of operation, it produced over $3.25 million worth of silver. However, in 1884, operations were halted after a vital coal shipment failed to arrive in time to power the pumps that kept the mine from flooding. As a result, the shaft was submerged, and mining efforts ceased. Despite attempts to reopen the mine in later years, it remained abandoned, with its history now a point of intrigue for visitors to the region.
