Why use rigid board insulation in a building envelope?

Rigid insulation is often used where continuity matters. Instead of fitting between framing, it can be installed as a continuous layer, which changes how a wall or roof performs over time.

Here are four things to understand:

Moisture Resistance Varies by Type
XPS has a more closed-cell structure and resists water absorption more effectively. EPS can absorb some moisture but also dries more readily. The right choice depends on where and how it is used.

Continuous Thermal Layer
When installed outside the structure, rigid board reduces thermal bridging caused by studs and framing. This creates a more consistent thermal barrier across the entire surface.

Reliable R-Value Performance
Both EPS and XPS provide stable thermal resistance, though their long-term performance differs slightly. Understanding those differences helps ensure the assembly performs as expected over time.

Can Support Air Sealing
When seams are properly sealed, rigid insulation can contribute to air control within the wall system. It is not a complete solution on its own, but it can play an important role in a layered approach.

At J Christopher Architecture, envelope design is never based on a single product. It is the result of how materials work together across the entire assembly.

Is sustainability overused in the architecture industry?

The phrase "sustainable" has become a common marketing tag rather than a fundamental design principle, according to recent research on modern project descriptions. Experts contend that although architects remain committed to environmental performance, the term is more often used as a "virtue signal" or a technical compliance note than as a fundamental architectural tenet. This flattening of language suggests that the phrase risks losing its professional relevance and becoming completely disposable within the industry as it becomes a branding reflex.

There’s a quiet weight to this day that words never quite reach. A day of rest; a day to remember.

Memorial Day isn’t only about remembering those who were lost. It’s about acknowledging the space they left behind, and the lives that continue around that absence.

For some, it’s a day of reflection.
For others, it’s a day that asks a little more of the heart.

In the midst of it, there’s something simple we can carry forward: a pause, a thought, a small act of care. A message sent. A door checked on. A moment of recognition that not everyone moves through this day the same way.

When we construct spaces for individuals to live, grow, and dream, we keep in mind that such calm was paid for by others. Their bravery created a way for our everyday.

To those who never came home, and to those who carry them forward——today, we remember.

Why consider mineral wool insulation?

Mineral wool, often referred to as stone wool, is known for its consistency and durability. It performs differently from many common insulation types, making it a strong option in certain areas of a home.

Here are three qualities worth understanding:

Maintains Performance Over Time
Mineral wool holds its shape and does not settle easily within wall cavities. Because of this, it tends to maintain its thermal performance over time without the gaps that can reduce effectiveness in other materials.

Dense and Precise Fit
Its density allows it to be cut cleanly and fitted tightly around framing, wiring, and openings. This helps reduce unintended air movement within the wall and improves overall consistency.

Naturally Fire and Sound Resistant
Mineral wool is non-combustible and performs well in assemblies where fire resistance is a concern. Its density also helps reduce sound transfer between rooms, making it useful in areas where privacy matters.

At J Christopher Architecture, material choices are made in context. Climate, construction method, and how a home will be used all play a role in selecting the right system.

What is modern architecture?

Most histories of modern architecture focus on Europe and North America but a new show coming this summer at the Museum of Modern Art begs otherwise.

MoMA's Architects of Liberation, which opens on July 5, 2026, reframes the history of modernism by focusing on West Africa's spectacular architectural growth during its independence. Moving beyond the usual Euro-American narrative, this exhibition demonstrates how countries such as Ghana, Nigeria, and Senegal used design as a potent tool for self-determination.

A Practical Arrival Space

Designed to support the rhythm of daily life, the mudroom offers a well-placed “drop zone” and a comfortable spot to pause when coming and going. A built-in bench provides a natural spot to sit and remove shoes, while deep lower drawers keep everyday items organized and out of view. Dark wood shiplap introduces warmth and texture, with simple black hooks creating an easy place for coats and bags.

A generous window above the counter brings in steady natural light and maintains a visual connection to the landscape beyond. Positioned between outdoors and the main living areas, the space helps the home transition gracefully from one moment of the day to the next.

What to Know About Cellulose Insulation

Cellulose insulation is often chosen for projects that prioritize recycled materials and effective air sealing. It is commonly used in attics and wall cavities, particularly in renovations.

Here are four reasons it continues to be a popular option.

Sustainable Material
Cellulose insulation is typically made from recycled paper products, often containing more than 75 percent post-consumer material. This reduces landfill waste and lowers the embodied energy of the product.

Dense Installation
When densely packed or blown into place, cellulose fills small gaps within wall and attic cavities. This helps limit uncontrolled air movement through the building envelope.

Sound Control
Because of its density, cellulose can reduce airborne sound transmission through walls and ceilings. This can improve privacy and comfort within the home.

Flexible Installation
Cellulose can be blown into existing walls or complex cavities without major demolition. This makes it especially useful in renovation projects where access is limited.

Like all insulation systems, cellulose works best when combined with proper moisture management and a well-designed building envelope.

A 19th-century armory reimagined.

Shigeru Ban has unveiled a creative concept for an organic timber concert hall housed within the historic shell of a 19th-century armory in Altdorf, Switzerland.

Designed as a "beacon of the arts" in the Alps, this compact 250-seat venue showcases Ban's unique command of natural materials to create a world-class acoustic environment for the Zauberklang cultural platform. By placing a modern, curving wooden structure into a listed heritage building, Ban produces a captivating architectural intervention that pays homage to the past while generating a dynamic future for global artists. This £43 million private project represents a bold new chapter in Alpine culture, demonstrating that the ultimate significance of a structure comes in its soul rather than its bulk.

There are people in our lives who shape us in ways we don’t fully understand until much later. People who help build the emotional architecture of our lives. Often, it’s a mother. Or someone who chose to stand in that place.

Not just in the big moments, but in the steady ones, showing up, holding things together, making space for others to grow.

Over time, you realize how much of who you are was built from those quiet acts of care.

Today is a moment to recognize that kind of presence. The kind that doesn’t ask for attention, but leaves a lasting mark all the same. We wouldn’t be the same without mothers.

Happy Mother’s Day.
