Quechua artisans from Peru. ⁣

From a textiles perspective, the ponchos these men are wearing are beyond impressive. ⁣

The communities they are from raised the sheep and alpaca, sheared and cleaned the wool by hand, spun it into yarn using drop spindles, dyed the yarn naturally using locally sourced plants and minerals, and wove the intricate patterns into the fabric using back-strap looms. ⁣

Much the same as their ancestors did 1,000 years ago. ⁣

The colors, patterns and symbols are all ancient, deeply meaningful and tell stories of their communities’ history, surroundings and spirituality. @ Peru

Today is Indigenous Peoples Day here in America. A day to celebrate and honor Native American peoples and commemorate their histories and cultures. ⁣

Eleven days ago the government of Ecuador enacted austerity measures which included ending a decades-old fuel subsidy. ⁣

The transportation sector blocked roads in protest. The indigenous peoples of Ecuador joined the protest to fight on behalf of the less wealthy citizens of the country who would be impacted the most. ⁣

On Saturday things turned ugly, as protesters were bombed and beaten and suffered at least 11 deaths. ⁣

Who is right or wrong on “the issue” is not important. Citizens have a right to protest, to express their opinions and be heard without violence and retaliation. ⁣

The indigenous peoples of Ecuador stood up for their rights and ideals, and many gave their lives in the effort. ⁣

The government has relented and will reenact the fuel subsidies, amidst calls for President Moreno to step down. ⁣

People are powerful when they band together with courage and conviction. ⁣

The indigenous peoples of Ecuador are more than worthy of our respect and admiration. @ Quito, Ecuador

We Are Qhipas

/key-pahs/ Qhipas are handcrafted shoes made with a vibrantly colorful, plant-dyed wool fabric.

The fabric is hand-loomed by the descendants of a very long line of Quechua-speaking artisans, for whom the preservation of their cultural heritage, skills, traditions, and language is paramount.

When you buy Qhipas, you help to sustain this amazing legacy and the Quechua way of life.

Two years in development. Hundreds of prototypes.
