From an unusable, sloped side yard to a level, functional outdoor space. 👏

This Austin homeowner had a yard with limited usable space, an aging fence, and a significant change in elevation. The goal was simple: make the space usable while improving privacy and curb appeal.

Here’s how we made it happen.

We started by addressing the elevation with a limestone retaining wall, creating the support needed to establish a new, level lawn area.

As part of the wall construction, we incorporated concrete footings and galvanized steel fence posts to provide a solid foundation for the new cedar privacy fence.

With the wall and fence structure in place, we backfilled, graded, and prepared the area for new sod, transforming what was once an awkward slope into a usable lawn.

We finished things off with a cedar fence, fresh landscaping, and river rock along the exterior wall for a clean, finished appearance.

The biggest transformation wasn’t just how the yard looked. It was what the homeowners could finally do with it.

Here are our general project investment benchmarks:

🥉 Bronze | $25,000–$35,000

🥈 Silver | $35,000–$75,000

🥇 Gold | $75,000+

Every property is different, and final pricing depends on the scope, materials, site conditions, and complexity of construction.

🏡 Here’s how our process works:

1️⃣ Discovery Call: We learn about your project, discuss your goals, and provide a preliminary budget benchmark to help determine whether we’re a good fit.

2️⃣ On-Site Consultation: For $500, we visit your property, evaluate the project, and develop a more detailed scope and proposal. This fee is credited toward your project if you move forward.

3️⃣ Design & Planning: Our $5,000 design phase brings your ideas to life through custom plans, 3D renderings, and project planning.

4️⃣ Construction: Once the design, scope, and final proposal are approved, we schedule construction and bring your outdoor space to life!

Our goal isn’t simply to give you a number. It’s to help you understand what you’re investing in, what’s possible for your property, and how to get it done right.

We’re looking for 3 Austin-area homeowners planning a major outdoor renovation in 2027.

At J&L Hardscapes, our design process typically starts with a $5,000 investment. But for three qualifying projects, we’re covering that design fee when you commit to building with us.

Whether you’re looking to make better use of a sloped backyard, build a retaining wall, or create a complete outdoor living space, we’d love to hear what you have planned.

Here’s who we’re looking for:

• Homeowners planning a $75,000+ outdoor renovation
• Ready to move forward with a construction agreement and deposit if selected
• Planning to begin construction January–March 2027
• Located in Austin, Westlake, Bee Cave, Lakeway, Dripping Springs, Georgetown, or surrounding communities

This Austin backyard started as a steep slope with almost no usable outdoor space.

We built into the grade — adding the retaining structure, plunge pool, deck and turf to turn the hillside into a space actually worth using.

The goal wasn’t just a pool. It was to create a backyard where there wasn’t one before.

This Lago Vista site has a steep, rocky transition with roughly 8’ of elevation change—and right now, runoff is essentially working its way down a natural cliff.

The concept here is to reshape that transition rather than simply build a wall in front of it.

We’re looking at cutting and shelving the existing limestone, creating a more controlled area for the retaining wall, incorporating a staircase between the upper and lower elevations, and using the new grades and wall layout to better collect, redirect and channel runoff through a planned drainage system.

One design. Multiple problems being solved.

Retaining the grade is only part of what the wall needs to do.

Design doesn’t eliminate every surprise in construction.

It eliminates the ones that never needed to be surprises in the first place.

Layout. Materials. Finishes. Scope. Budget. How everything is supposed to come together.

The real world will always get a vote. Soil moves. Water finds a way. Weather happens. Existing conditions surprise you.

We’d rather save those surprises for the things we couldn’t reasonably foresee—not what color the stone was supposed to be.

On this project, our team is building the structural core of a custom limestone retaining wall and carport structure. Every CMU cell is reinforced with steel, carefully grouted, and vibrated to eliminate voids, creating a solid foundation that will support natural limestone for decades.

You’ll also see our welded steel posts, which are epoxied into reinforced concrete footings before being encased in concrete columns. This hidden structural work is what gives a project its long-term strength—even though it’s never seen once the finished stone is installed.

We believe the work behind the finish matters just as much as the finish itself.

Our team completely reimagined the property by designing and building a custom steel patio cover system for both the front and back of the home. The front features a custom gable entry with exposed structural steel, creating a dramatic focal point and enhancing the home’s curb appeal. The rear courtyard was transformed with a welded steel and tongue-and-groove covered patio designed to provide the comfort of a traditional porch while maintaining an open, modern feel.

Retaining Wall Drainage & Pool Deck Drainage Solution | Austin, TX

We’re revisiting a recently completed drainage project where a failing drainage system was causing significant flooding, standing water, and soil erosion behind an existing retaining wall surrounding a pool deck.

Over time, runoff from the upper portion of the property was washing soil through and around the retaining wall, carrying sediment onto the pool deck and creating ongoing maintenance issues. Left unresolved, this type of drainage problem can lead to retaining wall failure, structural movement, erosion, and costly repairs.

To permanently address the issue, our team installed a comprehensive drainage system designed to capture, redirect, and safely discharge water away from the retaining wall and pool area.

Project Scope Included:

✔ Installation of (2) catch basins integrated into the existing pool deck

✔ Excavation and removal of saturated soil behind the retaining wall

✔ Installation of drainage aggregate to promote proper water movement

✔ Installation of non-woven filter fabric to separate soil from drainage materials and prevent future clogging

✔ Installation of underground drainage piping to collect and redirect stormwater runoff

✔ Collection of both pool deck surface water and hillside runoff from the upper portions of the property

✔ Discharge of collected water into a designated field area away from the retaining wall and hardscape structures
