This home had already been renovated on the inside—but the exterior was still outdated, visually unappealing, and lacking presence.

The front elevation didn’t match the upgraded interior. It felt short, closed in, and offered no real shade or usable outdoor space, making the entry uncomfortable and underwhelming—especially in the Texas heat.

The client had invested into the interior… now it was time for the outside to catch up.

Our goal was to transform the exterior to match the quality and feel of the interior renovation, while also improving function and livability.

We started by removing sections of the existing brick façade to open up the structure and allow for a true redesign—not just a surface update.

From there, we built a custom steel and wood porch cover, combining structural steel posts and beams with wood framing and a shingle roof system. This gave the home both strength and architectural depth while extending the front footprint.

To elevate the overall look, we installed custom atrium-style beams that draw the eye upward—making the home feel taller, more open, and more intentional from the street.

We then completed the transformation with new siding installation, tying everything together into a clean, cohesive exterior that finally reflects the quality of the home as a whole.

The result:
A home that once looked outdated is now a bold, functional, and fully shaded front space—enhancing curb appeal, comfort, and long-term value.

At J&L Hardscapes, we specialize in design-driven exterior remodels that align your home’s structure, style, and usability—not just surface-level upgrades.

We focus on:
• Custom porch covers (steel + wood)
• Exterior remodels & façade transformations
• Siding installation & upgrades
• Structural enhancements that improve height, shade, and presence

Most homeowners don’t realize how much space they’re losing because of slope, poor layout, or unusable yard design—especially here in West Austin.

This project started with a backyard that had a major grade change, limited access, and no real way to use the space. Instead of forcing a basic layout, we designed the yard to work with the terrain—using a combination of engineered and natural stone retaining walls to control elevation, custom steps to connect levels, and a layout that flows naturally with the property.

We also worked around the existing trees and incorporated curved elements like a built-in bench to avoid that rigid, “boxed-in” look most yards end up with.

To make the space functional day-to-day, we added artificial turf play areas for kids, pets, and low-maintenance use, along with patio zones and xeriscape planting to tie everything together.

Now, what used to be an unusable slope is a fully functional outdoor living space that actually adds value to the home.

We see this all the time in areas like Westlake Hills, Barton Hills, and Northwest Hills—homeowners dealing with slope, drainage, or awkward layouts who don’t realize what’s possible until the space is properly designed.

If your yard feels limited because of slope or layout, there’s usually a better way to approach it.

Custom architectural wall built from the ground up.

Freestanding CMU structure, fully grouted and wrapped in white limestone on both sides for a clean, finished look from every angle. Finished with custom-cut caps, integrated lighting, and a welded steel fence to tie the entire space together.

Designed to do more than just sit in the background—this piece defines the space and supports real structural elements like a floating bench.

If you’re thinking about upgrading your outdoor space with intentional, architectural features… this is what’s possible.

What most people see as a problem — a sloped area next to a sports court — is usually just a design opportunity waiting to happen.

On this project, the client assumed this section of their yard couldn’t be used because of the grade change. After walking the site and taking measurements, we found it was only about an 18-inch slope — which opened the door for a simple, clean solution.

We designed and built a low-profile limestone retaining wall using 6x6 chopped limestone blocks with a blend of natural tones to match the existing stone around the property.

From there, we transformed the space into a functional hangout area by installing:
• 5/8” Black Star gravel for a clean, modern base
• Lueders stone slabs for stable seating + walking surfaces
• A leveled zone that makes the space comfortable, usable, and intentional

Now instead of wasted space, this area becomes an extension of the sports court — perfect for seating, relaxing, and actually enjoying the yard.

A lot of yards in Central Texas have slope issues… but most don’t need massive retaining walls — just the right design approach.

If you’ve got a space that feels “awkward” or unusable, there’s usually a way to unlock it.

CUSTOM STONE POOL DECK AND PATIO

We were brought on this project and in conjunction with a pool builder and another contractor specifically to handle the Hardscape in minor landscaping for this project

in this video week detail the use of crash limestone fill as opposed to recycled soil for a pool deck the advantages of utilizing this material as well as key features of this project involving 2 1/4 inch stone slabs for a patio area on the lower elevation and a main pool deck area

Other aspects of this project entail some decking involving a wraparound staircase, utilizing tracks, artificial turf, and crushed limestone xeriscape

Front elevation ✔️
Now we’re flipping the script and bringing the same energy to the back of the house.

We’ve completed the majority of the structural framing and siding on the front exterior remodel, and now we’re extending the concept to the rear — fabricating steel roof supports mounted directly to the home, framing lumber on top, and creating a clean, modern roof structure that feels intentional on both sides.

We also installed a rain chain system and incorporated 6x6 pressure-treated beams to create an open-air accent cover — almost like a small courtyard moment to fill the void and add dimension.

And yes… we took a break to throw fetch with the client’s dog.

“Gosh!” — Napoleon Dynamite would approve.

🚧 Driveway Extension in Austin, Texas – 584 Sq Ft Concrete Addition

This homeowner’s driveway was simply too narrow — not wide enough to comfortably park a truck or accommodate guests. Instead of letting parking spill into the street, we designed and poured a 584 square foot concrete driveway extension directly off the existing slab.

✔ Expanded within City of Austin building setbacks
✔ Stayed within allowable impervious coverage limits
✔ No permit required
✔ No intrusion into public right-of-way

Because the extension remained within property setbacks, impervious coverage percentages, and avoided city right-of-way impact, we were able to complete this project efficiently and fully compliant with local regulations.

Now the homeowner can:
• Park a full-size truck comfortably
• Host multiple guests without parking stress
• Increase usable space and long-term property value

At J&L Hardscapes, we don’t just pour concrete — we create solutions that become permanent assets.

If you’re in Austin or surrounding areas and need:
• Driveway widening
• Concrete driveway extensions
• Patio extensions
• Slab additions
• Parking expansions

Commercial Pool Deck & Hardscape Project – Berry Creek, Georgetown TX

This project was one of the largest and most complex outdoor builds we’ve completed to date. Located at the Berry Creek rental properties in Georgetown, Texas, the scope included over 5,000 square feet of installed pavers, a large covered steel structure designed to house an outdoor kitchen, a custom fire pit, artificial turf areas, and integrated outdoor lighting throughout the space.

From layout and elevation control to coordinating multiple hardscape and landscape elements, this project pushed us in every aspect—from planning and logistics to ex*****on and finish work. Large-scale commercial projects like this require precision, adaptability, and a team that understands how all systems work together. Despite the challenges, the project was completed and delivered as designed.

If you’re searching for commercial hardscape construction, pool deck installation, large-format paver projects, or outdoor amenity builds in Central Texas, this project is a strong example of what’s possible with thoughtful design and experienced ex*****on.

Front Porch Extension Progress Update 👷‍♂️

We’ve officially wrapped up roofing, shingles, fascia, and waterproofing on this custom front porch extension. The house looks pink right now—and no, it’s not paint 😅—that’s our waterproof membrane system, which protects the structure before siding and masonry go on.

This porch extension is built on a steel structural framework, designed for long-term durability and clean architectural lines. We’ve tied the new roof seamlessly into the existing home, installed proper flashing and membranes, and now we’re ready to move into the next phase.

Up next:
➡️ Siding installation
➡️ Brickwork on the front façade
➡️ Final exterior detailing

Projects like this are all about doing things in the right order—structure first, waterproofing second, finishes last—so the end result looks great and lasts for decades.

If you’re in Austin or Central Texas and thinking about a front porch extension, patio cover, steel porch structure, or exterior home addition, this is the exact process we follow.

Did y’all enjoy that Texas freeze? ❄️😅
Because we’re right back at it.

Framing is pretty much dialed in on this porch extension, and the guys are laying OSB decking so we’re ready for roofing next week — drip edge, marine-grade shingles, then siding right after.

But the star of this build is that custom steel gable over the front door 👉
It opens the elevation up, makes the house feel taller, and completely changes the presence from the street. Easily my favorite detail so far.

Still a few things to dial in, but this one’s coming together clean

This patio wasn’t poured by us — but the texture was uneven and the finish just didn’t feel right for the space.
Instead of tearing it out, we sanded it back, prepped the surface, cleaned up the edges, and finished it with a semi-transparent stain and sealer.

Not something we usually do — just what this project needed to make the space work better for the client.

If your outdoor area looks “off” but doesn’t need a full demo, sometimes the fix is simpler than you think.

Ever look at your yard and think, “I don’t even know what to do back here”?

That’s exactly what we help with.

Some homeowners want the full picture before building — detailed design, realistic renderings, and walkthroughs that show how everything comes together.
Others just need clear direction — a simple layout and basic drawings to get started.

Either way, our process is built to bring clarity before you commit.
