🛠️ How to Change Garage Door Rollers (Step by Step)
⚠️ Safety First: Garage doors are heavy and under high spring tension. If you’re not confident, always call a professional. These steps are for standard residential garage doors with extension or torsion springs.
1. Gather Tools & Parts
Replacement rollers (nylon or steel, depending on your choice)
Stepladder
Ratchet & socket set
Flathead screwdriver or pry bar
Pliers
Safety glasses & gloves
2. Disconnect the Opener
Unplug the garage door opener.
Pull the emergency release cord to disconnect the door from the opener.
This ensures the door moves freely by hand.
3. Open the Door
Lift the garage door manually until it’s about halfway up and secure it with clamps or locking pliers on the track so it doesn’t move.
4. Remove the Bracket or Hinge
Start with the bottom rollers:
Use your ratchet to loosen the bolts holding the hinge/bracket.
Carefully pull the hinge away to release the roller from the track.
5. Remove the Old Roller
Slide the old roller out of the hinge bracket.
Inspect the hinge for wear or cracks before reinstalling.
6. Install the New Roller
Slide the new roller into the hinge slot.
Guide the roller wheel back into the track.
7. Tighten Everything Securely
Reattach the hinge or bracket with bolts.
Make sure it’s flush and aligned with the track.
8. Repeat for Each Roller
Work your way up from the bottom to the top rollers.
For top rollers, you may need to gently bend the track outward with pliers, then push it back into place once the roller is installed.
9. Test the Door
Remove the clamps/pliers holding the track.
Slowly lower and raise the garage door by hand to ensure it runs smoothly.
Plug in and reconnect the opener.
10. Final Check
Listen for smooth, quiet operation.
If the door still jerks or drags, check alignment or call a professional.
