The Fort Richardson State Park - Texas Parks and Wildlife is a designated NRHP, an RTHL, and a SAL. The Park's recent restoration of the ca. 1867 Officer's Quarters received a Historic Restoration Award last night by Preservation Texas during the 2025 Preservation Texas Honor Awards in San Antonio.

Projects like this embody our purpose—where we can immerse ourselves in the work of restoring irreplaceable pieces of our architectural heritage. The entire Fort Richardson site preserves one of the earliest eras of Texas history. During the post–Civil War period, it served as an important military installation for the north-central and west-Texas frontier, contributing to regional security and the expansion of settlement in Texas. The Officer's Quarters is the only known example of cottonwood construction in the Nation.

Preservation Austin is a true credit to the City and an inspiration to preservationists across the state. Their decade-long dedication has culminated in a restoration that honors both the architecture of the McFarland-McBee House and its cultural significance to the community. They have accomplished what so many strive towards, and we are proud to have been part of this remarkable effort. Their leadership continues to light the path for all who work to safeguard our shared heritage. Thank you, PA!

Last night, Preservation Austin was thrilled to join our statewide colleagues for the Preservation Texas Honor Awards ceremony in San Antonio, where we were awarded for our rehabilitation of the McFarland McBee House! 🏆

The Cox Springs School House is one of our most favorite little projects. It was one of those rare moments when everything came together just right. It's a one-room schoolhouse located in Jonestown. It was just finished, and is an academic restoration meeting the highest bar for the Standards for Rehabilitation. It's an amazing transformation, and worth the trip to see it.

This is a one-of-a-kind organ that has not operated in years; we brought in Friedemann Buschbeck, an organ restoration specialist, to evaluate its condition and help plan for its restoration. This was the first moment he turned it on.

We love finding artifacts hidden in walls and floors. Here we discovered a historic newspaper, a white cloth with blue stripes, jute canvas backing for wallpaper (it also has ceiling plaster remnants), and pages torn from a writing book... in this case, someone got in trouble for drinking and had to write lines about the ills of alcohol! 😄

Here's a new project we're very excited about. This beautiful 1909 chapel, designed by architect Leo M.J. Dielmann, was gifted to Fort Sam Houston by the people of San Antonio. Its interior includes features such as the large central dome, ornate stained glass windows, and decorative plaster finishes. It also has an immense organ with 33 ranks (over 1000 pipes) that was custom made for the chapel.

We're working with the Mary Allen Museum to preserve and interpret the historic Mary Allen Seminary ruins, located in Crockett. It was the first college constructed specifically for black women in Texas. Our new video animation shows its original 1886 appearance.
