Designing and building a better home is a complex undertaking, but it doesn’t need to be difficult. Our build team, led by Janet and Connor, recently met our MEP trade partners and our clients to review a series of coordination items. Agenda items include confirming light switches, shower valve heights, mechanical system locations, and other MEP items. With the design team also present we were able to make some quick modifications in the field now that the spaces are beginning to come to life. This collaboration and teamwork is a crucial requirement for a successful project.

Our multigenerational home is nearing completion. Here are a few shots of both the main home and attached accessory dwelling unit. As we continue to consider ways in which ADUs impact our design and strategic thinking, this project is a reminder that it can be accomplished elegantly. Not to mention both homes will be fully powered by PVs installed on a separate barn building!

Wolfworks Sketch Series: For this project, we explored options of converting an existing raised ranch to provide single level living and age in place considerations. We have a very mission aligned and amazing client who's goals include adding a front porch, adding a "social hub" kitchen space, and upgrade the performance of the home to approach Net Zero energy consumption (after PV installation). Considerations for how the building will be used now, in 20 years, in 50 years, etc. are all part of this challenging equation. We are currently working through our Reality Check Budgeting phase and look forward meeting the project goals for our client. Stay tuned!

Wolfworks recently spent three days in Concord, New Hampshire with an amazing group of similar mission driven companies. Occurring every 6 months, these business owner peer groups are part of NESEA's Building Energy Bottom Lines program. In this setting, business owners help each other design and build better companies by sharing lessons learned, holding each other accountable to their goals, and offering support and encouragement. Our group, is facilitated by Jamie Wolf, founder of Wolfworks. We had a blast catching up with the other 7 companies as we focused on ways to improve management skills. A dinner party also allowed for Jamie and Chris Royer to get a quick sketching session in. We are excited to be back in CT with some new energy and inspiration thanks to our fellow Wolfpack group members.

At Wolfworks, we approach everything we do as a design project. This includes designing relationships. We cultivate and depend on long term relationships with reliable and experienced collaborators. Among our favorite partners are Lee & Sons, a family of professional woodworkers with a legacy spanning generations. During our West Hartford Deep Energy Retrofit, we faced challenges procuring overhead doors due to extensive lead times. Thankfully, Lee & Sons stepped in and took charge of fabricating and installing these doors. Our ability to do what we do every day is a result of the trust, reliability, and talent of our valued trade partners.

Connor Musinski has joined Wolfworks to work side by side with Janet Downey as a Project Manager. Connor is both an experienced carpenter and project manager having worked on custom homes and remodels in Western Connecticut. He's also personable and fun to work with. From early in the design process and throughout construction Connor will be tracking every detail and document we depend on to build successfully. In the future Connor will have the opportunity to become a Wolfworks owner in our Worker Coop.

This lakeside screen porch is the quintessential outdoor room. In a summer home devoted to family gathering the doors to the house can stay open and activity can take place in this screen porch as if it were just another room in the house. This is one of the great things about a screen porch – as long as the weather obliges that door can just stay open. And unlike an open patio evening gathering ended by the appearance of bugs, diners can linger as long as they’d like.

This Avon Net Zero home includes an attached accessory dwelling unit (ADU). Connected to the main home by a curved screened in porch and interior hallway, this home offers balance between togetherness and personal space, allowing each family member to enjoy their own living area and privacy. We have seen this trend of multigenerational living recently grow in popularity as folks are drawn to the flexibility and versatility of ADU's to meet their family's needs.

It's great to see the views at this incredible site being framed at tour Net Zero Ready Home in Woodbury. Our team has completed the outer stud wall of our eventual double stud wall assembly. We sheathe our ceiling to create a continuous air barrier to minimize air leakage, a major contributor to heat loss in a building. At this stage of the project we also perform a blower door test to identify any leaks through the shell. Up next is to install our dense-pack cellulose insulation within the outer stud wall cavity prior to installing our interior stud wall. Stay tuned!

Better Home. Better Life. Better Planet!

Wolfworks designs and carefully crafts homes of lasting beauty that produce as much energy as they use. With exceptional health, comfort, durability, and energy security baked in. Better Home. Better Life. Better Planet.

Wolfworks is a company of experienced designers and builders. We align design with construction to create value. For people planning to invest in creating a better home, we are guides. We provide GPS like navigation to a distant destination that our clients can trust and follow, coupling creativity and imagination with practicality and reliability to create spaces that look good, work well, and feel good to be in. We know that without guidance the process will be more difficult and the result less satisfying. We know the ropes!

That's who we are and what we do. We've been doing it for over thirty years, beginning in Hartford's West End, gaining a reputation for craft and imagination in Greater Hartford and the Farmington Valley. We are closely aligned with the principles of Sarah Susanka's "Not So Big House" series of popular books, and our work is featured in two of them.
