Check under the kitchen and bathroom sinks this week.

Leaky pipes and damp cabinets draw pests looking for water, and the gap where pipes come through the wall can give them a way in. Fix the drip, dry the cabinet, and seal around the pipe.

It takes a few minutes and can make a real difference.

Mice do not always come in at ground level.

They can climb siding, downspouts, and tree branches to reach gaps along the roofline, around the chimney, or at the attic vents. If you have heard noises in the ceiling, the entry point may be up high.

Trim branches back from the roof and have the roofline checked before winter.

Do you still need pest control in the winter?

Mice and rats stay active indoors all winter, and insects that got into your walls this fall may show up on warm days. Depending on what your technician finds, winter visits may focus on rodent activity and entry points, while spring visits shift toward ants and spiders.

This week is a good time to finish your pre-winter checklist: seal gaps around pipes and utility lines, replace worn door sweeps, check vent covers, and move firewood away from the house.

What does a rodent inspection actually involve?

We start outside, walking the foundation, siding, roofline, and garage to find the gaps mice and rats use. Then we look inside at the attic, basement, and other areas where you have seen signs.

Traps handle the rodents already inside. Finding and sealing the entry points is what helps stop the next ones.

Cardboard or plastic?

If you store anything in the basement, attic, or garage, plastic bins with tight lids are the better choice. Mice can chew through cardboard, and the paper inside makes good nesting material.

Getting boxes up off the floor on shelves helps too. It makes it easier to spot droppings and harder for rodents to hide.

Your porch light might be feeding the spiders.

Bright white lights draw insects at night, and spiders set up webs nearby to catch them. Switching to warm-toned or yellow bulbs can cut down the insects around your doors, and fewer insects usually means fewer spiders.

It is one of the easiest pest fixes around the house.

Pulling fall and holiday decorations out of storage this week?

Check the boxes before you bring them upstairs. Droppings, shredded paper, and chewed corners are signs that mice have been there. If you find any, wear gloves and clean the area before you put anything back.
