Shades of Green Permaculture

Shades of Green Permaculture creating landscapes with ecological intelligence We are a regenerative landscape design, build and education firm located in Atlanta and serving the southeast.

Every outdoor space we create contributes to protecting biodiversity; growing food, medicine, and pollinator habitat; building soil, and restoring the water cycle. Your garden, no matter the size, can have a positive impact. Most gardens are designed to be high input systems⏤water-intensive, chemically-dependent, and high maintenance. Instead of toxic, resource-heavy conventional landscapes, we bu

ild health from the ground up by transitioning landscapes to become ecologically-sound, healthy ones. Our work is to reconcile the human built environment and the natural world, creating a conversation between the two that is life-giving. By building lasting relationships with our clients through our consult-design-build-caretaking process, we empower you to understand and interact with your landscape as you deepen your role as an environmental steward.

The Summer Solstice reminds us that abundance isn’t something we force, it’s something we tend. ☀️🌿

The longest day of the year invites us to notice what’s thriving: pollinators buzzing, tomatoes ripening, shade trees stretching wide, and landscapes built to work with nature instead of against it. Here’s to deep roots, long evenings outside, and gardens that nourish both people and planet. Happy Summer Solstice 🌞 (June 21st)

Before: Erosion, invasive ivy, and stormwater runoff moving faster than the landscape could handle. After: A resilient, water-wise landscape designed to slow and guide rain back into the earth. 🌿With dry creek beds, spillway paths, layered planting, and rebuilt soil health, this front yard now works with nature instead of against it.

Beauty, function, and ecology working together — exactly how a landscape should.

Permaculture landscapes aren’t just about plants — they’re about people, too. 🌿

Paths, patios, gathering spaces, and stonework invite us into relationship with the landscape and with each other. Thoughtful hardscaping helps us slow down, connect, harvest, rest, and experience the garden as part of daily life.

So much gratitude for our install team, whose craftsmanship brings these spaces to life with so much care and beauty.

We get this question a lot: “Should I use landscape fabric?”
Short answer? We don’t—and here’s why 👇

It’s often sold as a w**d solution, but over time, soil and debris build up on top… and w**ds grow anyway. Except now, they’re tangled in fabric and harder to remove. More importantly, it disrupts the living soil. Healthy landscapes rely on microbes, fungi, and airflow—fabric creates a barrier that limits it all. In permaculture, we don’t try to block nature—we work with it.

Instead, we use organic mulch, dense plantings, sheetmulching, and groundcovers to suppress w**ds and build soil. Less control, more collaboration 🌱

🌱 Start with the soil Healthy meadows begin below ground. Minimize disturbance, skip the chemicals, and build organic matter where you can.

☀️ Right plant, right place
Choose native and useful plants that match your light, moisture, and soil conditions. That’s where resilience begins.

🍂 Smother, don’t strip
Instead of tearing everything out, use sheet mulching or dense planting to gently transition from lawn to meadow.

🌸 Plant in layers
Grasses, flowers, groundcovers—diversity is what creates stability, habitat, and beauty over time.

🌼 Seed + plugs = success
A mix of both helps you establish faster while still allowing the meadow to naturalize.

🐝 Remember slow landscaping
You might not see the abundance of your work for three years. Meadows take time—and that’s the point.
This isn’t about a perfect wildflower moment—it’s about building a living system that feeds pollinators, builds soil, and grows better each season 🌱

🪲Observe regularly, which allows to respond quickly.

🪲If you anticipate a pest based on past years, you can proactively spray and wash the foliage using neem oil and castile soap.

🪲Prune and thin for best airflow. Humid and cramped conditions can often lead to mildew and fungus issues.

🪲Diversify! Incorporate companion plants and plant a variety of species from different plant families to reduce damage and discourage an infestation.

The Permaculture principles are guidelines for creative design and action, allowing us to change our minds and behavior to change our environment. The principles are often displayed in a circle, suggesting that we might continually start again and that the end is the beginning and vice versa.

Our mission is to empower people to participate in Earth’s return to health. That means that if we are doing our job right, our clients will continue practicing permaculture day to day.
