Hello again fellow members of the instagram woodworking community and other lay folk. I am in fact not dead though it has been a long long time since I’ve done any traditional woodworking. I decided to clean all the junk off my workbench recently and started messing around with the lathe again after work. After blowing through a first bowl I managed to bring this one to completion.
Really hoping to get back into it sometime soon, I’m itching for a new box build.

After a couple of failures and some learning I was able to save a partial blowout on this little bowl. Very glad I kept going on it after seeing the pay off in the grain, thanks to the Yorkshire Grit. Turns out I was running the lathe way too slowly.

So I bought a lathe…

Big surprise it’s a . I messed around a little with a piece of poplar when first set it up but this is my first attempt at a bowl/cup. First thing I’ve turned aside from a couple of pens during a class. Looking forward to messing around more with it after work

As mentioned in my last post, I built a pergola in the backyard last week. Still needs some extra bracing, lights and some sun shades but the structure is up.
You may notice I ended up going with 4x4s for the uprights instead of the normal 6x6s. I had some second thoughts about this myself as I was assembling everything but I can say now that everything is pretty sturdy with no signs of buckling. The posts are all around 1.5’ buried in the ground. There is a tiny bit of sag in the 16 footers but the weight on the top will only get lighter since all the wood was pretty wet still.
Overall dimensions are 16’x10’ and ~7’5” (I didn’t need to make many length cuts on this project).

Newest project just left the shop today, another Mothers Day project that I finished a little late for my Nana. This one was a fun little project that I got to do some fine woodworking on. A temporary break from boxes and catch all trays.
Did some through tenons with wedges through the steps and the sides.

Next up on the docket is a pergola build!

Some good finish pictures of the Mother’s Day present catch all box.
Had fun making this one, the first box made in the revamped shop. I had a few moments where I thought this one was gonna be a throw away but in the end I saved it. After getting everything glued up I realized the Padauk end pieces were a little too short which caused gaps in the rabbets and the sides weren’t perfectly perpendicular to the base. I ended up correcting it after everything dried by running a bottom bearing router bit around the whole outside of the box to get a perpendicular reference surface. Though I ended up getting a gouge in one side so I went deeper and added the walnut strip on the bottom to hide it. Then I was able to plane the sides to be flat with the walnut. Some lessons learned about using the router table to do box joinery.

Tray Lid - Plum
Sides - Padauk
Base & Bottom Strip - Walnut
Liner - Spanish Cedar

As all people who have any kind of workshop know, it’ll never been done but I’ve reached a point where most of what I originally planned is done. So now it’s time to start cranking out projects again.

I’ve just finished a butcher block top for my Craftsman rolling box that contains all of my engineering stuff in my room. The entire thing was made of wood salvaged from motor crates from my previous job, basically pallet wood. I had some good chunks of figured maple and a piece of what I think is really light walnut sapwood but all of the pieces used for this block were softwood. There is one piece in the center that I think may be soft maple but I’m not certain.

Next project on the docket is a box!

Well it’s far from perfect but I’ve been messing around with prototyping the first of some non-custom products to sell. I’ve always been a fan of catch all trays so I think I’ve perfected a method for making them fast. This one is made from the plum wood from my last reel. I’m very surprisingly impressed by the grain in this wood. Considering making a full box out of this stuff.
