Granny T's Garden Located in NW Iowa, Granny T's Garden is my 4 acre slice of heaven, with over 850 varieties of hostas and daylilies, as well as sunny and native perennials.

While we no longer have a formal business, we continue to sell plants and decor when available. Welcome to Granny T's Garden. We originated as a hosta, daylily, succulent and vintage garden nursery in 2011. However, as the business grew very rapidly and we began raising our special needs Grandson, it became very apparent that my families needs were going to suffer spring through fall. So I made th

e very difficult (and yet easy) decision to close the business in 2017. We've spent the last two years selling off plant and decor inventory, and for the first time in 9 years, I've been able to spend time in my gardens "just for the fun of it". I am currently working to repair the damage of voles and drought from previous years. We will continue to sell hostas and daylilies from our gardens by appointment, on a very limited basis. I've been blessed to have had this opportunity to meet so many "Garden Friends" through the years!

More “veggie work” this week! 8 qts of carrots frozen and a gallon bag cleaned and sorted. Look at that beautiful purple carrot!! And some unexpected garden work I’d rather NOT be doing.

In case you’re wondering if adding some milkweed to your garden will bring in the monarchs, here is your evidence that it will! I vowed to only raise a few batches of ten or less. Yet, I sit with three butterfly waiting to be released, a chrysalis ready to eclose, 5 green chrysalis, 1-2 “j”s, and 9 fat cats. The last 10-15 weren’t even intentional but every time I brought a feeding branch in, it contained a tiny newly emerged cat that I hadn’t seen. Or a few eggs. All from this same section of milkweed. The 6 cats in the photos are in one location with one mature plant and a few seedling! I have plenty of seed pods available now, and will have lots of seedlings for sale in the spring!

I'm now into my "different type of busy" season- canning/processing/freezing busyness. Had a little help getting most of the deadheading done thanks to Joy Lynn West and Elle Gascho. I gotta say, I was not expecting that many baby orb weavers invading my gardens (that's not a good thing for me!)

***Also, if anyone wants some asclepias incarnata milkweed seedpods, let me know. I've just started harvesting them. Can meet you in Fort Dodge on Tuesday afternoons.

Finally seeing a ton of bees. Crazy to observe just one plant and see how many different insects it is feeding/attracting!! Imagine if everyone put a tiny corner of their yard into pollinator habitat!!! Photos don’t do them justice because you can’t see all the little bugs!

Consider this your warning: these hostas, and others you may say with bright unnatural colors, are a scam. Hostas of these colors do not exist. And while it seems absurd that there are folks out there that fall for this, I assure you they do! We see them questioned frequently on the Hosta pages. I encourage you to report these as scams to Facebook and warn others, just in case.
