Hard water is one of the most common problems affecting Bakersfield homes. If you're dealing with white buildup on faucets, dry skin after showers, low water pressure, or appliances that seem to wear out too quickly, your water may be the reason.

Hard water contains excess minerals that can create scale buildup inside plumbing systems, water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines, and other household appliances. Over time, this can lead to reduced efficiency, higher utility bills, and costly repairs.

At ZIP Plumbing, we help Bakersfield homeowners identify water quality issues and find the right water treatment solution for their home. Whether you're considering a water softener, whole house water filtration system, or simply want to understand what's in your water, our team can help.

Many homeowners think water filtration only affects drinking water.

A whole-home water filtration system works at the point where water enters your home, helping improve water quality for showers, sinks, laundry, and appliances.

Understanding how water moves through your home is the first step toward making informed decisions about water treatment and filtration.

Which area of your home uses the most water?

As both a plumber and a homeowner, there are certain things I notice right away when I walk into a home.

Most people assume their water is fine because it looks clear—but water quality issues often leave clues throughout the house.

Here are 5 things that make me question a home's water quality immediately:

1️⃣ White spots on faucets, shower doors, and dishes
This is often a sign of hard water and excess mineral buildup.

2️⃣ Dry skin or dull hair after showering
Your water quality can affect more than just your plumbing.

3️⃣ A strong chlorine taste or smell
Many homeowners get used to it over time, but it's one of the first things I notice.

4️⃣ Sediment buildup in faucet aerators
Small particles can accumulate in fixtures and reduce performance.

5️⃣ Appliances that wear out faster than expected
Hard water can shorten the lifespan of water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines, and other water-using appliances.

These signs don't always mean there's a serious problem—but they're usually worth investigating.

How many of these have you noticed in your home?

Hard water is one of the most common water quality concerns homeowners experience.

From white spots on dishes to mineral buildup in appliances, hard water can affect different parts of your home over time.

Understanding your water quality is the first step toward making informed decisions about water treatment and filtration.

Have you noticed any of these signs in your home?

As a dad, I think about water a little differently than I did before having kids.

When we move into a new home—or even visit one of our customers' homes—there are a few things I pay attention to before feeling confident about the water my family is drinking.

Here are 5 things I check:

1️⃣ How does the water smell?
A strong chlorine smell or unusual odor doesn't automatically mean the water is unsafe, but it's usually the first thing I notice.

2️⃣ What's the age of the home's plumbing?
Older pipes can affect water quality and may contribute to sediment, discoloration, or other issues over time.

3️⃣ Is there visible sediment or discoloration?
Cloudy water, particles, or rusty-looking water are signs worth investigating.

4️⃣ Has the water ever been tested?
Many homeowners assume their water is fine because it looks clear. Testing is the best way to understand what's actually in it.

5️⃣ Does the home have a filtration system—and when was it last serviced?
A filter only works if it's maintained. An old filter can be just as concerning as having no filter at all.

Most water issues aren't obvious until you know what to look for.

Which one surprised you the most?
