Starting Saturday with a Level II Inspection 🔎

These clients recently moved to Bakersfield, and their home inspection recommended their fireplace & chimney be inspected by a qualified chimney professional 👍🏻

After sweeping the chimney, we are using the Chim-Scan®️ to inspect the interior of the flue to inspect for cracks, damage, deficiencies, and suspected malfunctions and will present our findings in a detailed report for our customers following service.

NFPA-211 Chapter 15 cites a Level II Inspection SHALL be conducted:

• Upon addition or removal of one or more connected appliances or upon replacement of an appliance with one or more of dissimilar type, input rating, or efficiency, unless the last connected appliance is removed and chimney use will be discontinued

• Prior to relining of a flue or replacement of flue lining, in accordance with 7.1.10

• Upon sale or transfer of the property

• After a building or chimney fire, weather or seismic event, or other incident likely to have caused damage to the chimney

June is NATIONAL SAFETY MONTH 👷🏻‍♂️

This is a great time to schedule an appointment to inspect and service both your fireplaces & chimney systems AND your dryer vent systems.

Recommended ANNUALLY by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), inspecting your fireplace, chimney, and dryer vents can improve the safety of your home:

• Brush combustible creosote buildup out of your chimney which can cause a chimney fire
• Remove obstructions from your flue that pose an issue with your fireplace’s draft
• Ensure your chimney is covered with a spark arrester (CA Building Code REQUIREMENT for wildfire prevention)
• Inspect for cracks, fractures, disconnected pipe and other damage inside the chimney
• Detect and prevent potential carbon monoxide exposure from gas log sets and gas hearth appliances
• Test for gas leaks
• Brush combustible dryer lint out of your dryer vent
• Ensure flexible vent hose is properly connected to reduce exposure to mildew, mold, and carbon monoxide

This structure fire is believed to have originated in the chimney.

Factory-built fireplaces (often called “zero-clearance” fireplaces) are designed and tested to be installed in direct contact with combustible building materials per the manufacturer’s installation instructions.

Annual inspection of these fireplace systems are crucial as any number of issues can exist with these systems:

• Failure of thermal protection due to age and use
• Construction defects (installed improperly)
• Damage from use and a lack of service
• Disconnected chimney pipe
• Excessive creosote buildup/obstruction

These issues can result in heat transferring to combustible building materials and result in a structure fire, as well as potentially exposing your living space to dangerous carbon monoxide and smoke exposure, and other hazards.

An unfortunate lesson for this homeowner: She hired an unlicensed chimney professional who took her money and never returned to finish the job.

Here in California, contractors licensed by the Contractors State License Board are required to collect no more than 10% or $1,000 up-front (whichever is cheaper) when bidding work at your home.

If the contractor fails to meet their obligations, you have recourse with the CSLB by filing a claim and the contractor’s bond coverage ($25,000) is in place to provide restitution.
