Winter is almost here and according to the Farmers’ Almanac, we can expect a winter that is in the “Frosty, Flakey, Slushy” category. They are predicting a good amount of winter precipitation for the first time in a few years.
With that in mind, here are three winterization tips every homeowner should have on their list in order to prepare and protect your home.
1. The first is simple, make sure you shut off exterior hose bibs, bleed at exterior, and install a foam cover. It’s important that you walk around your home and evaluate windows and doors for penetrations, cracked caulking, and failed weatherstripping.
2. Next, ensure that your gutters, window wells, and stairwell areaways are clean. Test your heating system to make sure it’s working well and set the thermostat to go no lower than 50-55 degrees so your pipes don’t freeze. Also make sure to change your furnace filter (to prevent it from working harder than it needs to).
3. Third and most importantly, make sure you and your family are safe by checking your fire, CO2, and radon detectors. With Daylight Savings Time ending last week, the National Fire Protection Association recommends that homeowners change their smoke detector batteries whenever they're changing their clocks. Make sure vents for the dryer, furnace, stove, and fireplaces are clear of any debris.
These three tips will keep you and your families safe and avoid larger problems and costs down the road.
