Have you heard big loud POPS or CRACKS? However, you can't find anything that has fallen or broken.
It is likely a “frost quake” (officially called a cryoseism) is basically a mini earthquake caused by frozen ground — not shifting tectonic plates. No fault lines. No magma. Just water + freezing + pressure.
Here’s what happens: the ground is wet from rain or melting snow, then temperatures drop fast (usually overnight). That water in the soil freezes quickly. When water freezes, it expands. If it freezes slowly, no big deal. But if it freezes fast, pressure builds underground with nowhere to go…
💥 CRACK
That sudden release of pressure can send a shock through the ground. You might hear a loud boom, a bang like something hit the house, windows rattling, brief shaking, or even see small ground cracks. It can honestly sound like something exploded outside.
They’re usually not dangerous, just startling. In rare cases, they can crack foundations, split sidewalks or driveways, or open small ground fissures. Most of the time, it’s just Mother Nature slamming the freezer door.
Frost quakes aren’t earthquakes; they’re the ground freezing so fast it literally cracks under pressure.
