The patriotic ballad “America the Beautiful” by Katharine Lee Bates actually has four verses. Most people know no more than the first. Her inspiration came while hiking near Pikes Peak, Colorado, when she was teaching at Colorado College in 1893 This was the inspiration for my painting of the same name. The other three are:

O beautiful for pilgrim feet,
Whose stern, impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine,
Till all success be nobleness,
And every gain divine!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

These stanzas drive home that throughout our 250-year history we have had to work together to promote and ensure that our freedoms and democracy survive and thrive. That is as true today as it has been at any time in our history. Hopefully my painting conveys that to you and to all who see it. “God Bless America!”.

I was inspired to paint “America the Beautiful” at a get-together with friends to watch this past year’s Super Bowl. Yes, the Super Bowl! Well actually, I was inspired listening to Brandi Carlile performing “America the Beautiful” during the Super Bowl LX Pregame Show. I had never really listened to the words of that song before. Look at the works below and see if you can find each of the elements in my painting:
O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
