Before and After

These are distant maternal line relations of mine.

Don’t judge the picture too harshly because I didn’t have access to the original photo and ergo, could not control how it was scanned. My belief is that the Before was a picture of a picture and I had to start with a jpeg.

That said, it cleaned up well enough and while it doesn’t sport enough resolution to enlarge too much, I’d have no problem printing this at 8x10. Moreover, the tonality is now fairly well-balanced (notice the right hand side of the Before where the exposure resulted in some harsh highlights).

Which is all to say what I say quite a bit: it’s almost never too late or too far gone to improve your family pictures.

Drop me a line if I can help with one of yours.

PLEASE SHARE to all of your groups!

I need your help to reunite copies of this old Eureka, KS basketball photo with family members!

Fortunately, we have names:

Front Row, Left to Right: Donnie Henderson, Duane Vanhaverbeke (I believe he passed away in 2013), Bob Dettmer, Bob McCue, Paul Brand

Back Row, I assume Left to Right: David Simmons, Wendal Jacobs, Jerry Steel, Dick Barbara, Wendon Ball.

The coaches are unnamed.

I believe this photo is late 1940's, early 1950's.

I did a little digging. On this page, under 1948, most, but not all, of the boy's names are listed, which leads me to believe the year of this photo wasn't 1948 on the dot.

Note: I have deliberately kept the resolution low as I've had some issues with images being swiped. The final image is remarkably good for its age.

Thanks in advance for sharing! You never know who knows who, so even if you think it's unlikely, please share anyway.

Hopefully we can make this a success story. So many old photographs aren't labeled.

I'm going to try tagging a few organizations to see if they can help.

This photo came from the Library of Congress and was dated circa 1861- likely at the beginning of the Civil War. That's 160 years ago!

You can see the original file here: https://www.loc.gov/item/2010650831/

The first image (dark) is the scan as done by the LOC. It's a standard quarter-plate tintype that is part of the Gladstone Collection (http://loc.gov/pictures/collection/gld/). The William A. Gladstone Collection of African American Photographs provides almost 350 images showing African Americans and related military and social history.

The goal for this one was to see how much detail there was underneath the scan. Minimally, I wanted those who would view this to see this man's face, at least, better than the LOC version.

After the initial exposure and toning corrections were made, the photo in the middle was the result, which still showed a sizeable amount of physical damage (let's see how good we look at 160 years).

The final photo doesn't fix everything; far from it. Rather, I tried to clean it up just enough so as not to distract.

A satisfying restore.
