And another from Proven Winners called Hydrangea Demystified.

Hydrangeas are among the most breathtaking flowering shrubs you can grow. Their enormous blooms can transform an ordinary garden into a sea of blue, pink, white, or purple flowers that last for months. Yet every year, thousands of gardeners find themselves asking the same frustrating question: "Why....

It’s September 1st and it seems like we should be winding down our gardens soon. But we are just getting started with another round!

We are just over 5 weeks until the predicted first frost in our area. The first frost will take out a lot of the summer garden plants. That puts us at October 8th. The frost date isn’t always exact of course but this year the almanac is predicting cool and dry weather this fall in our part of the state.

So now we need to decide two things.

First, do we cut back/ top off/ pinch the flowers off on our tomato and pepper plants? You want to give everything time to develop and ripen and more flowers and growing leaves means more energy going to things that probably won’t produce before the first frost. Pinching and topping off will allow the energy to focus on developing the fruit that has already started growing. At least on your larger tomatoes and peppers.

And second, do we plant a fall crop and if so, what do we plant? Things that take 30 days or less are perfect to plant this time of year. Like radishes, spinach, loose leaf lettuce and turnips. Perfect fall crops. But can we push it and plant beets and carrots too? Maybe kale and collards? They take longer but are frost hardy. If we end up having warmer weather in October, this would be a great advantage. 🤔

So we are going to assume the fall is going to be stellar and we will go for it! Yes we will pinch back our tomatoes but only the variety that are more than 12oz. And the bell peppers too but will leave the little guys. Maybe the pimento because we have a ton on the plants but they are not turning red like they should.

And then in the bare spaces we will plant more radishes, some spinach, kale, loose leaf lettuce, and beets. And if we have collard seeds, we will plant some collards as well.

And our mums will be here on Wednesday 9/2 in the afternoon!

Welcome to fall gardening y’all!

Wait! Resist the urge to get your mums this weekend!

Ours will be here soon!

The first delivery of mums will be this coming Wednesday or Thursday, 9/2-9/3.

Our supplier does an amazing job growing these mums. And they can be hardy! This is the third year these two came back and they are bigger and fuller and I didn’t even have to pinch back the buds and they will bloom at just the perfect time.

The first is a pic of our 8” mums from last year (the pot is 8” but thy cup overflow on these babies) and the second and third is what you can get for a few years if you leave them in the ground, prune back before winter, and throw a bit of mulch over the top.

We will also have kale and cabbage and aster and marigolds along with fall rudbeckia and other fall flowers. Pumpkins, straw bales and corn stalks will be here before 9/17.

We had to thin out the radishes we recently planted. They need at least an inch between plants to grow to their full potential. Instead of throwing the cut seedlings away, we ate them! 😋😂.

Radishes make great micro-greens. These were a bit small but they were still delicious. They add a bit of spice to salads and entrees. Add a pile on your hamburger instead of lettuce. Or just eat them like we did. Micro-greens are nutrient dense and so delicious.
