As a Master Licensed Electrician, I get asked all the time how to safely power a home during an outage with portable generators.

A backfeed setup must include a panel interlock (or transfer switch). The interlock prevents the main breaker and generator breaker from being ON at the same time, ensuring generator power cannot energize utility lines.

Without proper isolation, backfeeding can:

• seriously injure or kill utility workers
• destroy your generator when grid power returns
• cause electrical fires and equipment damage
• create dangerous voltage inside your home

The goal is safe, code-compliant backup power, never shortcuts.

If you’re unsure about your setup, reach out to us Titans Electric

After a service disruption caused by a fire, requires that you take several steps to ensure repairs are made and that your service can be restored safely.

1. Hire a licensed contractor
For each utility affected by the fire, you must hire a licensed professional to make necessary repairs and bring the system up to code. If your electric weatherhead or meter center was damaged, you must have it repaired by a licensed electrician.

2. Initiate the restoration process
Once repairs are underway, have your licensed contractor call the MLGW Builder Services department at (901) 729-8630, and select option 1 to start a work order.

3. Request an inspection
In most cases, your local code enforcement office will need to inspect and approve the repairs before MLGW can restore your service. Your contractor should be familiar with this process.

If you don’t intend to use any utility services at this location for an extended period, please contact the MLGW Customer Care Center at 544-6549 for residential customers and 528-4270 for business customers to request disconnection of services.

If you have any questions, please call Titans Electric 901-308-4837

Be careful with space heaters!!! Took a call yesterday. Customer had nothing plugged into this outlet. However she did have 2 space heaters plugged in two other rooms. Well this was the outcome. They were real lucky they had working smoke detectors and had up to date fire extinguishers on hand and had the fire contained before the fire department could make it out. It definitely could’ve been much worse. Not to mention this was at 2am!!!
