This week, members of the Alleghany Services team attended the New York Agricultural Conservation Districts meetings, connecting with conservation professionals from across the state!

New York's conservation districts play an important role in helping farmers access the resources, technical expertise, and programs needed to put conservation practices into action. Their work helps turn good ideas into real solutions for farms and communities.

At Alleghany, we're proud to work alongside conservation districts, NRCS offices, and watershed organizations to help bring those solutions to life through engineering, drainage design, installation, and water management.

Because when it comes to conservation, collaboration makes all the difference.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this week's meetings a valuable experience. We look forward to continuing these conversations and partnerships!

It’s Apple Day!

New York is known for its apples, but producing a great crop takes much more than a good growing season. Orchard health depends on factors ranging from soil conditions and nutrient management to weather and water.

And while we tend to think about irrigation when it comes to growing crops, managing too much water can be just as important. Good drainage helps protect root systems, improve soil conditions, and give growers more control when Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate.

So whether you prefer Honeycrisp, McIntosh, Empire, or another New York favorite, today is a good day to appreciate everything that goes into growing that apple.

Joe P. | Foreman | 9 Years
Joe plays an important role in leading our drainage crews and training new hires as they get started at Alleghany. His experience and knowledge in the field continue to make an impact on our crews and the next generation of our team.

Jake J. | Heavy Equipment Operator | 7 Years
Over the past seven years, Jake has continued to grow his skills as an operator, including dedicating himself to learning how to run a tile plow — a key skill within our drainage operation. His willingness to learn and take on more is greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Joe and Jake, for your years of hard work and dedication to Alleghany.

World Food Day is an opportunity to recognize the enormous system, and the many hands, behind the food we depend on every day.

Today is World Mental Health Day; a reminder that taking care of ourselves and looking out for one another matters.

In agriculture, construction, and other demanding industries, long days, changing conditions, deadlines, and time away from family can take a toll. Checking in with a coworker, friend, or family member can make a difference.

Take care of yourself, check in on your people, and remember that asking for help is a sign of strength.

For Cranberry Month this October, we’re sharing a look at Alleghany CEO Chad Klotzbach’s recent visit to A.D. Makepeace Company in Massachusetts, where approximately 1,700 acres are dedicated to cranberry production.

The visit offered a firsthand look at the infrastructure, water management, and coordination behind a cranberry harvest. During wet harvest, bogs are flooded and the vines are agitated to release the berries. Water levels are then raised so the floating fruit can be gathered, cleaned, and moved out by conveyor.

Much of the crop moves through the Ocean Spray cooperative, where cranberries can be frozen and processed throughout the year.

Visits like this bring valuable perspective to the engineering, drainage, and water-management solutions we deliver every day at Alleghany.

And despite the social media warnings, no deadly spiders were spotted!

We are so excited to be part of this year’s GLOW With Your Hands event in Genesee County today!

This hands-on career exploration event gives local students the opportunity to experience careers in agriculture, skilled trades, manufacturing, construction, and more! Students were able to discover just how many opportunities are available right here in our region.

We meet with students, shared more about the work we do in agricultural drainage and water management, and showed the next generation what a career in our industry can look like.

We were happy to be a part of such an amazing event! Thank you to all the organizers and volunteers that make it happen every year!

Harvest season means sharing the road.

As farmers head into one of their busiest times of year, you’ll likely see more tractors, combines, and other farm equipment traveling between fields.

Slow down. Give them space. Pass only when it’s safe. And remember, the person behind the wheel wants to get home safely, too.
A little patience can make a big difference in keeping everyone safe this harvest season.
