BEFORE ➡️ AFTER | Sometimes the gate is the easy part. This project came with a few surprises.

When the property was originally built, someone thought it was a good idea to run the electrical conduit feeding the shop/garage directly underneath the future fence and gate line. To make matters worse, the conduit was not buried to the proper depth.

Then the original fence installer came along, set the gate post anyway, and encapsulated the electrical conduit inside the concrete footing.

Not exactly ideal. 😬

Replacing a failed gate system suddenly became a much more complicated project.

Our team had to carefully work around the existing electrical infrastructure and develop a creative solution that would give this large double gate the structural support it needed without creating another problem underground.

But that’s what we do. We solve problems.

🔧 Troubleshooting Tuesday: The Blown Fuse Was Just the Beginning

This automatic gate came in with a pretty simple complaint: it wasn’t working.

At first glance, we found a blown fuse. Easy fix, right? Not quite.

Once we started properly diagnosing the system, we also found the batteries needed to be replaced — and that opened the door to a whole list of additional installation and safety concerns that need to be addressed.

This is exactly why we don’t believe in simply replacing the failed part and walking away.

Automatic gates are moving pieces of equipment. A system can technically “work” while still having electrical, mechanical, or safety issues that could lead to another failure — or something much more serious.

THIS is the Butler Contracting difference.

To the customer, these two brackets probably look exactly the same.

One is $1.98.
The other is $5.57.

Both fit the same 2-3/8" pipe. Both will hold the same fence rail, and once the project is finished, you may never know which one your contractor used.

But they are not the same.

The more expensive Simpson Strong-Tie bracket uses the heavier-duty ZMAX® galvanized coating, providing greater corrosion protection for exterior applications.

This is exactly how one contractor can come in cheaper than another.

It isn't always because they're more efficient. Sometimes they're simply saving a few dollars here, a few dollars there, on materials the customer will never notice.

Cheaper brackets.

A brand-new fence…and the gate already doesn’t work.

We stopped by a property today to look at another project and noticed this fence had been installed by a well-known local fence company within the last couple of weeks.
Unfortunately, the gate is already unusable.

There’s a lot more to building a fence than setting posts in the ground and throwing panels and gates together.

Proper gate design, hinge placement, latch alignment, structural support, clearances, materials, and installation techniques all matter—especially if you expect that gate to still work years from now.

🚨 FENCE FAIL FRIDAY: The design wasn’t necessarily the problem — the craftsmanship was.

A wood-framed gate can work when it’s built correctly.

The problem is that a gate leaves very little room for shortcuts. The framing has to be square, the bracing has to actually transfer the load back toward the hinges, the hardware has to be installed correctly, and every connection matters.

When the craftsmanship isn’t there, gravity starts exposing every weak point.

That’s what you’re seeing here.

Could this style of gate have worked? Possibly.
Was it executed well enough to last? Definitely not.

At Butler Contracting, we typically use welded metal gate frames because they give us a stronger, more predictable structure and help eliminate many of the problems we see with poorly built wood gates.

Because a good fence deserves a gate that works just as well.

Sure, you can find automatic gate operator packages for under $2,000.

You can find even cheaper ones online.

But an automatic gate isn't just a motor that opens and closes your driveway.
