Went downtown to Garfield Park Conservatory today to watch the GreenCorps graduating class of 2018. So proud of those guys and all the hard work they put in. Also, seeing some palm trees was nice after the lousy weather we just had. If you need some sunshine in your life during the dark days of winter, check it out!

We had another very wet spring, and now are headed into hot conditions again. Several years in a row of this weather pattern has taken a toll on many of our conifer (evergreen) trees, with fungal diseases like Rhizosphaera Needle Cast and Diplodia Tip Blight causing pine and spruce trees to turn yellow, then brown, and drop needles. Ultimately, these diseases can kill these trees. We're a little too late in the season to treat against these diseases now, but keep an eye on your evergreen trees! If they are starting to look sickly, make sure to clean up the "needle duff" from underneath them this fall when you rake leaves. This keeps the fungal spores away from your tree. And of course, call a Certified Arborist so you can treat your trees next spring during the treatment window, which goes from Mid April-Mid May.

Hey all! We've been lucky this year to have so much rain. But while ample rain is good for most trees, remember that as we get into the heat of summer, trees may need water when things dry out. Infrequent (1-2 x a week) deep waterings (5-10 gallons) are the best way to go. Don't turn that hose on "full blast"! Let the water slowly work its way into the soil. Remember that overwatering can be worse for a tree then no water at all. Different trees also have different water requirements, so check if your tree likes the soil more or less wet. And of course, mind your outdoor sprinkler restrictions. With restrictions in place, you can still fill a 5 gallon bucket in your tub or slop sink, and go out to water your tree.

Ouch! Proper tree pruning helps with wind-related issues such as this. As we enter the summer storm season up here in Chicago, remember that an ounce of prevention is worth quite a bit off cure...Make sure your trees are pruned to not only provide the greatest benefits to their health and longevity, but also the least amount of risk to your home and property!

Hey all, Graf Tree and Natural Resources Management is seeking a summer intern for our natural areas management team! This will be a mix of prairie and wetland restoration, floristic quality assessment, and some urban forestry/tree inventory thrown in for good measure. Great opportunity for a college summer job or maybe the recent high school grad looking to get into natural resource management. 30-50 hrs/week during the summer months, very competitive pay, and maybe full time when you graduate! Let us know if you know someone who might be interested!

Hello friends, spring is right around the corner, and it's time to start thinking about your trees again! If you have a flowering crab apple that always loses its leaves by July, this is due to a fungus called "apple scab". Contact us to help prevent this from happening, just with a simple spray application, and keep your crab apples beautiful all year long!.
