Summer. Hot humans and hot animals. Humidity so thick you can’t breathe. Hauling hoses, fans, ice blocks and whispering little prayers all day that everyone makes it through the midday sun. Flies and mosquitos. Night frog choruses under streaking meteor skies. Bees and butterflies on the flowers. The garden is overflowing and weedy. Summer isn’t my favorite, but goodness it’s beautiful out here.

Our Legend.

We live near a shooting range and wedding venue, fireworks and gunshots are frequent. He handles it confidently. I brought him inside during the main nights of holiday fireworks for his comfort, but we had a random weeknight recently where a neighbor decided to start a booming fireworks show after midnight. Legend said, “Hey, this is not routine or normal! My animals and family are under attack!” and set out to show those fireworks that they aren’t welcome around his place. I went out to bring him in to ride out this late night show more comfortably inside, but this loyal giant refused to rest until he knew all the animals were safe and then he needed to physically inspect every kid’s room and see them sound asleep in their beds before he would rest. He’s just a real loyal soul and works so hard at his job. We’re so lucky he’s ours. ♥️

Goodbye Spring 2026 and hello Summer!

-Extra calved a beautiful heifer we named Ginger in April.
-I had heavy loss early on with our meat chicks due to a late freeze, but 40 still made it to our freezer in May.
-Garden got planted in the cracks of life in 5 min intervals.
-Legend has grown massive and is becoming the best protector and loyal guardian.
-Despite my best efforts with AI, I just couldn’t get the twins bred. I was trying to come to terms with making a very difficult decision on what to do with them when a couple really moving acts of kindness brought a handsome young South Poll to my place for the summer.
-Most of my Spring was spent processing over 40 gallons of milk a week into butter, cheese, yogurt…you name it I probably made it. 😅

I planted an entire garden in 5-10 min intervals the last two months. I set literal timers for 5-10 minutes and ran out with a toddler on my back and other kids underfoot and I threw as many seeds/plants in the ground as I could. Other days I focused on amending with compost or pulling weeds. I had real doubts I could pull this off, but the garden is thriving currently! It was a good lesson for me that a few minutes a day working on a goal can still lead to a big payoff. 👏
