Ten days without measurable rain, we received our first "no water" well customer this morning. Irrigation contractor turned on their lawn sprinklers overnight. Oops!

How did we advise? Three steps:

IMMEDIATELY turn off the power to the well pump.
Then, wait at least four hours for the well to "re-charge."
Until the next healty rainfall, use water sparingly.

Power washing? With well water?

Whether doing your own power washing or hiring it done, be cautious of water usage, especially during low rain weeks such as we're experiencing. (Hiring a pro? Ask them to bring their own water.)

Like to luxuriate in sudsy shampoos, bubble baths, or just feel the water soothe your body after a hard workout? All that happens with soft water - and if you're not lucky enough to come by that naturally, you'll want to consider investing in a water softener.

More practically, soft water extends the life of your home's mechanical systems - water heaters, pipes, faucets, shower heads - because it doesn't clog them with mineral deposits, which reduce water pressure and flow.

High-quality or dual-tank systems often last over 20 years. Cheaper models or those on municipal water with high chlorine may only last 5 to 7 years.

Key factors influencing water softener life span include water hardness, usage levels, and regular maintenance.

Factors Affecting Lifespan:

* Water Hardness & Usage: Extremely hard water or high water consumption causes more frequent regeneration cycles, increasing wear and tear.

* Maintenance: Regular maintenance, such as cleaning the brine tank and replacing resin, can extend a unit's life.

* System Quality: Higher-end, professional-grade models often last longer than big-box store models.

If your disposal is older or beginning to show signs of wear, you may want to replace it before anticipated price increases kick in.

If you're planning to entertain friends and family during summer's upcoming occasions - Mother's Day, Father's Day, Graduation, July 4th, Family Reunions - you may want to assess your disposal's performance before your guests arrive.

Longevity depends heavily on usage frequency, maintenance, and the quality of the unit. Proper care, such as avoiding fibrous foods and grinding ice, can extend this, while heavy use can shorten it.

Key Factors Influencing Lifespan:

*Maintenance & Care: Regular cleaning and avoiding putting grease, bones, or fibrous materials (like celery) down the drain prevent premature failure.

*Usage Frequency: Daily, heavy use puts more strain on the motor, leading to faster wear.

*Water Quality: Hard water can increase mineral buildup, leading to corrosion and earlier replacement.

*Unit Quality: Higher-end models, particularly those with stainless steel components, often last longer than cheaper, lower-horsepower alternatives.

What does the 1918 Spanish Influenza have to do with boiler sizing?

It was thought that fresh air would lessen the flu transmission, so people were told to sleep with their bedroom windows fully OPEN, even in freezing weather. So this boiler in a home built in 1923 was sized appropriately, at 170,000 btus. The current heat load calculation? Just 45,000 btus. When this boiler was brand new and operating perfectly it sent one of every four fuel dollars directly up the chimney. Our new modulating/condensing boilers? Only one of every TWENTY dollars spent on flue gasses and the rest available to heat the home.

Before you start dreaming about lush lawns, juicy tomatoes, and flower beds bursting with color, there’s one little thing that can make or break your growing season: your outdoor plumbing.
