Frozen Pipes? Here’s What to Do Right Now: Frozen pipes can turn into serious water damage fast. Taking the right steps early can save your home.
Step 1: Turn off your water
- Shut off the main water valve to your home or at the city meter near the street.
- This prevents water from flooding your home once frozen pipes thaw.
Step 2: Reduce pressure in the system
- Open cabinet doors under sinks.
- Turn on one faucet to a slow drip — a bathtub faucet works best.
- Choose the fixture farthest from where water enters your home to help protect all lines.
Step 3: Thaw safely
- Use a hair dryer or heating pad on exposed pipes.
❌ Do not use boiling water or open flames — this can cause pipes to burst.
Step 4: Check for leaks
- As temperatures rise, inspect exposed pipes outside first.
- Then check under sinks, around the water heater, and any visible plumbing inside.
