The metalwork on this residence takes its cue from the house. At the entry, the arched top rail answers the transom window above it, and a band of short pickets between the double rails gives the gate a finished edge at eye level.

The same language carries through the garden gate and around the pool, set lower where the landscape asks for it. At the water’s edge, the enclosure meets safety requirement a pool demands without announcing it, with picket spacing, height and gates resolved within the same proportions as the rest of the design. Every panel shares the warm gray of the window frames, so the enclosure reads as part of the architecture rather than something added to it.

Turn a shadowbox fence on its side and the whole yard changes shape. The horizontal lines stretch the yard wider and lower, echoing the long lines of the house rather than fencing it in. Appearance boards alternate across the rail, one face then the other, so the fence has depth, shadow, and no bad side to hand the neighbors.

The gates carry the same pattern straight through. The wide drive gate is built on a steel frame beneath matching boards, so even the largest opening holds the line.

It's an old fencing idea, given a modern line.

When a homeowner wants to add on to an existing fence, the challenge is making the new work disappear into the old. On this project we extended the property’s aluminum fencing to match the original exactly, carrying the same ornament and proportions through every new section.

Getting there meant sourcing components that lined up with what was already installed and laying out each run so the spacing never broke rhythm. It’s the same architectural eye we bring to our fully custom work, applied to making something new look like it was always there.

Privacy that doesn't cost you the view.

Set between brick piers and painted to sit quietly against the white walls, this one turns an enclosed pool court into an open garden and back again. The lattice at its base echoes the trellis work of the house, so whether open or closed, it always feels like part of the architecture.

Some properties come with a century of history already standing in the yard. On this one, the live oaks set the terms, and the fence was designed to sit quietly beneath them.

White painted brick columns and a low brick base carry black powder coated steel panels along the street. From the sidewalk, it reads as a natural part of the house, as if it had always been there. Inside the line, it creates something the property didn't have before: a private backyard, open to the light and the canopy, but set apart from the street.

The two black labs on the last slide have taken over security. They mostly work from the shade.

We posted this one a while back, before the stain went on, and it was already a fence we were happy with. Then the color went on and the entire backyard shifted.

The stain is a deep green grey, which is the quiet trick here. It borrows from what is already growing in the yard, so the fence reads as shadow rather than as a hard edge. Everything planted in front of it comes forward. The hedge gets richer, the greens get greener, and the fence stops being the first thing you notice. It becomes the reason the rest of the yard looks finished.

It is the smallest decision in a fence project and it changes the most, which is why we bring it up early rather than at the end. If you are planning a fence, choose the color while you are still choosing everything else. It is the upgrade people are happiest they made.

Some of our favorite work is the kind that never asks for attention. Hand-selected cedar, a true and level run, a cap detail that resolves cleanly at every post. Nothing about this fence is loud. Everything about it is deliberate.

Not every project is a fence. This client needed exterior equipment out of sight, and the answer was a custom lattice screen designed to the home: framed panels, a shaped ogee detail at the corners, finished to match the trim. It solves the problem so cleanly that it reads as if it were part of the original architecture. That is the standard, whatever the structure.
