This detail typically would require 3 subcontractors, possibly 4, to complete.

Coordination with other subs to come do a small amount of work in the middle of ours adds time to the overall schedule.

For MSC this shows up with insulation, pre-rock, and gauge metal framing especially.

BEST OPTION - Change the design to omit the coordination required

2ND BEST OPTION - MSC picks up additional scope necessary to allow our scope to be completed interrupted.

WORST OPTION - Force each scope to have multiple starts/stops to complete their work (more cost & more time)

The book Critical Chain by Eli Goldratt talks about the schedule impacts of handoffs.

Let's eliminate them as much as possible!

Rick and his cousins come up in conversation fairly often - They're pretty rowdy, and they're tough competition. Once in a while it's fun to take the drone and catch Rick and his crew in action!

AI is starting to be useful finally! Some of the ways are listed below - Check them out and let us know how you (other subcontractors / GCs) are starting to incorporate AI in everyday work?

1. **Data Extraction for Bids**: We have a template for Go / No-Go decisions on bid invites. AI tools like Claude efficiently gather necessary information from plans, including apprenticeship and prevailing wage requirements, as well as drive time from our home office.

2. **Account Reconciliation**: The speed at which a chatbot can identify combinations for reconciliation is impressive, making the process much more efficient.

3. **Building Code Queries**: Instant interpretations of building codes, complete with links to applicable regulations, are extremely useful, especially when dealing with multiple trades and jurisdictions.

4. **Visual Content Creation**: AI can create engaging visuals for our LinkedIn posts, enhancing our online presence.

I’m curious to hear how other construction companies are integrating AI into their daily operations.

CONSTRUCTION, and HAD A PLAN TO ADDRESS THEM?

As each project goes by, at MSC we are continuing to document the issues that come up and building our system to catch them on the front end.

What would be more powerful than our own system though, would be if each of the trades could provide a list of their biggest beefs on projects.

I'm not sure what the best way to go about getting this information would be... thoughts?

General contractors commonly put together very detailed scope letters on the front end of projects, to ensure scope is covered.

Maybe the subcontractors could figure something like that out for their beefs with each other trade?

Some kind of a matrix would be pretty cool... Or an "Issue List" by trade.

Anybody's two cents on the topic would be great!

The Waverley Country Club is getting an infinity pool and new pool house.
MSC is taking care of the rough carpentry, structural steel, and the wood trellis.

The guys did a nice job on the trellis purlin profiles!

"Give Risk to Those Best Positioned to Control It"

Trade subcontractors—not the GC—ultimately control most job costs.

Labor productivity. Material procurement. Waste. Scope ex*****on.
That said, owning that risk—especially on multi-year projects—isn’t easy.

What separates a subcontractor who absorbs risk from one who manages it?

That’s where the real value is.

Curious how others are approaching this on long-duration projects, especially with current fuel volatility, inflationary pressure, and material variability.
