Today John Anderson and I went all-out tourist, from the Rijksmuseum to the Dutch countryside. Cheese was eaten. Rembrandt’s The Night Watch was under (highly visible) restoration. Monet painted windmills, and then we saw the real things - including one grinding paint pigments. We came home a little wind blown but very happy.

I always like to see a city from the water first - it helps me get oriented to the districts and landmarks. We didn’t take a canal tour last time we were in Amsterdam, but we did it tonight, just before sunset!

Hafen City, the redevelopment area around the historic docklands in Hamburg, Germany. We are making a pilgrimage to the Elbphilharmonie designed by Herzog and centurion, which houses a concert hall, hotel, and apartments on this narrow spot of land between docks. It is a fascinating part of the city!

Off to Sweden, land of John Anderson forebears (maybe, but that’s another story…), home of IKEA and Minecraft, Volvos and Vikings, reindeer and the Nobel prizes. Sightseeing with our guide Steen in Malmö and Lund. We saw intricate clocks, gingerbread facades, and gorgeous half-timbered structures. We ran into the princess and sceptre-bearer of Lund University, lovely Scandinavian design stores, and some handmade chocolates.

Back at work today, looking at how Copenhagen deals with stormwater - and the rain added a little extra to understanding...

Back at work today, looking at how Copenhagen deals with stormwater - and the rain added a little extra to understanding how it flows, eddies, delays, impounds… and then releases into the harbour. Since the 1990s, the city has transformed its water from a polluted sink into water so clean everyone can swim. Yesterday was the 20th Copenhagen Swim, where people can do a lap through the harbour (2km) or go on for 5 or 10km. A record 6,000 swimmers participated! And what has clean water done for the economy? So much redevelopment, new housing, young people staying after university, families moving here for the great quality of life. Not to mention, the huge influx of corporations and tourism. Clean water? Priceless… and it all starts well upstream from its final outfall.

In third grade, everyone had to do a report on a country - and somehow, I got Denmark. I don’t remember the major exports, the population (in 1968), or the government leaders. I do remember, and vividly, hearing about Tivoli Gardens, which sounded like the most fun place. John Anderson and I strolled through the gardens tonight with huge smiles on our faces, enjoying the beautiful landscape, the immediacy of bells from the city centre, and the shrieks of folks on the rides. The ticket seller was happy to inform us that it was the first night of the flower festival - I think that is a new addition since my report.

The M/S Marine Museum in Helsingør was constructed within a dry dock, and features sloped floors and transparent bridges crossing the space. The “dry” dock actually allows water to fill the basin, so they are working to cap and waterproof it, for use by the museum. The exhibits are captivating, with stories of legendary captains, shipwrecks, and Danish innovations on the seas. As an added bonus, it lies across the moat from “Elsinor” Castle, famously the site for Shakespeare’s Hamlet. We had delicious Danish sandwiches made with their customary dark bread. To eat or not to eat? We ate, and very well indeed.

It may surprise you to hear that we visited the Louisiana Museum of Art today - without leaving Denmark. This incredible collection began in 1958, and was named after the three wives of the property owner, all named Louisa. (No comment.) The traveling exhibitions on Sophie Calle and Lucien Freud were comprehensive and fascinating, but for us, the building is the real star. Designed specifically to showcase modern art by Jørgen Bo and Vilhelm Wohlert, it transforms the works and creates a circuit of halls and courtyards with natural light and spectacular views.
