One of our favorite milestones in the building process, the electrical walkthrough meeting!
This is where a home really starts to feel personal. From lighting placement to everyday functionality, we walk through every detail with our clients to make sure their home works beautifully for the way they live.
Our goal is always to make these meetings feel collaborative, exciting, and stress free!

With a view like this, the trees, the marsh, and the tides become part of your home.
Morning coffee by the windows, dinner prep with a breeze, friends gathered around the island long after the meal is done. This is the kind of space that makes everyday moments feel just a bit more memorable.

When we’re preparing a foundation and floor system, we’re already thinking ahead and planning for details later in the build. For this job on Distant Island, we’ve already discussed the hearth, fireplace, and mantle design with our clients, so we can recess the floors for brick early and accurately. We’re also setting anchor bolts directly into the foundation walls (instead of drilling later). It’s these early decisions that keep the build running smooth and efficient from start to finish and result in a better, stronger structure.

The end of framing is an exciting and important milestone. Everything is still exposed. Every wire, every pipe, every decision is still visible, and more importantly, adjustable. Because once drywall goes up, all of this gets covered for good.

That’s why we don’t rush this phase. We slow the process down and go deep into the details.
We create renderings of the spaces, so we’re not just guessing. We produce detailed construction drawings, so every trade is working from the same clear plan. We post QR codes on site that link directly to plumbing and electrical specs, so information is accessible in real time.

Then we walk it.
We walk the house with our clients during the electrical walkthrough, talking through outlet placement, lighting, and how they’ll actually live in the space.
And then our team walks it again during our rough-in meeting. We cross-check plans, drawings, and renderings, looking for anything we can solve now instead of after drywall.

Because this is the last time we get to see inside the walls. This is where small decisions prevent problems later.
This is where good homes become great homes.
This is where our systems matter most.

Some mornings in Beaufort, when the fog lingers a bit longer on the river, it’s nice to slow down and appreciate where we live.

On the way to check one of our current homes, we couldn’t help but stop and capture a few views that make this place so magical. Mossy oaks, quiet streets, and the sailboats of Factory Creek. It’s not hard to see why our clients chose Beaufort as the perfect place to build their dream home.

This house we are building in Celadon is designed to feel right at home here, with timeless details like open rafters tails, dormers, and tongue & groove ceilings across a wide front porch. The kind of porch that was made for coffee in the morning and visits with neighbors in the evenings.

We are grateful every day to build homes in this beautiful place and we’re lucky to call it home.

When you hire Mussell-Built, you’re not just hiring a builder — you’re getting the value of our team and our systems.

I recently attended a builder training where the presenter said there are at least 60,000 potential points of failure in the process of building a custom home. Honestly, I believe it. And trying to avoid every one of them can be exhausting.

That’s why I’m so grateful for the team we’ve built.

I snapped this photo from the top of a ladder today while our crew gathered to solve just one of those potential failures. A client had selected exterior lights that simply didn’t fit the space well — about $1,300 worth. We caught this at the framing stage - before the lights were ordered, while we still had time to adjust the wiring and the siding details to accept a different light that will work perfectly.

As I sat there listening, I couldn’t help but smile. The conversation was full of experience, expertise, and maybe most importantly — genuine care. Probably more care than most people would ever expect.

They were discussing details few people would notice until it was too late. Details most of our clients never have to worry about or hear about — because the 59,999 problems we prevent rarely get talked about.
It’s the one that slips through that matters most.

We aren’t perfect. We do make mistakes. But we hate them, and every project is an opportunity to get a little better than the last.

I’m incredibly proud of our people, and I’m committed to making sure they always have the time, space, and support to slow down and work through the details the right way.

This was just one moment today as we spent hours working through our pre-drywall checklist — one small example of the care that goes into every Mussell-Built home.

Can you picture your home when it’s still just 2D plans on paper?
We dive into the details early for accurate budgeting, intentional planning, and better ex*****on.
And the renderings are pretty fun too! 🏡
