A single four-sided brick chimney sits at the center of this Combahee River farmhouse, holding living, dining, cooking, and porch together under reclaimed heart pine trusses. One hearth, one room, every part of daily life orbiting it.

Reason #6 you'll want your architect along for the (probably bumpy) construction ride:

Architects see the big picture and can anticipate how any changes in the field will affect the rest of the construction.

The last waterfront lot on Broad Creek came with a catch: three massive live oaks standing right where a house might go. For us, that was never a problem to solve; it was the starting point. The entire design grew from the decision to leave every tree standing.

The dogtrot has been a fixture of Southern architecture for generations. But what does it look like when you bring it into the 21st century, on a bluff overlooking the May River, with folding glass walls and a zinc roof?

We're thrilled to be featured in Custom Builder this month, sharing the story behind our contemporary take on this beloved regional house form. Read the full case study at the link.

Our clients saw what others might have missed: a 1947 fish camp on the edge of Port Royal Sound, quirky and full of potential.

Rather than demolish, they chose to preserve, reducing waste and honoring the character of the original structure. We rethought the layout entirely, vaulting ceilings and opening walls to let the light and the views back in. A new screened porch on the south side was positioned to maximize cross ventilation, allowing warm air to escape and the constant Lowcountry breeze to move through the home naturally.

In Beaufort, a home isn't truly finished until it's been designed for what the coast can throw at it.

This Cane Island residence was built to withstand 140 mph winds and debris impact, with living spaces raised a full story above base flood elevation. Roll-down hurricane screens protect the large sliding doors. And if the power goes out for days? The home runs on solar panels and a Powerwall backup battery.

Resilience, it turns out, looks a lot like calm.

Most architects work around a site's existing features. We design with them.

For this Riverfront Dogtrot, a magnificent live oak was already there. It shaped everything: the curved terrace, the boardwalk, and the flow from inside to out. Rather than a backdrop, the tree became the anchor of the entire design.

What do you design for a client who plays guitar and needs a space all their own?

For the Shrimp Pond House on Spring Island, the answer was a freestanding studio addition, complete with a courtyard, an observation deck, and shoji doors that open to the marsh. A retreat within a retreat.
