Pro Tip:

Call about our preventative maintenance program. A weakening HVAC capacitor can cause several noticeable symptoms before it completely fails:

Hard starting: The outdoor unit, compressor, or blower may hesitate, struggle, or take longer than normal to start.
Humming without starting: You may hear the motor or compressor humming while the fan is not running.
Intermittent operation: The system may work sometimes and fail to start at other times.
Slow or stopped condenser fan: The outdoor fan may start slowly, run inconsistently, or not start at all.
Frequent breaker trips or overheating: A struggling motor can draw excessive amperage when the capacitor is weak.
Bulging or leaking capacitor: A swollen top, corrosion, or oil leakage is a strong indication that replacement is needed.
Reduced cooling performance: A weak capacitor can prevent the compressor or fan motor from operating properly.

The most accurate way to identify a failing capacitor is to test its microfarad (µF) reading with a meter and compare it with the rating printed on the capacitor. For example, a 45/5 µF ±6% dual capacitor should remain within its manufacturer's allowable range.

Because capacitors can retain a dangerous electrical charge even after power is disconnected, testing and replacement should be performed by a trained HVAC technician.

Pro Tip

For most residential HVAC systems, the best filter depends on the system design, allergies, pets, and how restrictive the ductwork is.

1-inch filters: Usually MERV 8–11 is a good balance between filtration and airflow. Change about every 30–60 days.
4–5 inch media filters: Typically MERV 11–13 provides excellent filtration with less airflow restriction than a high-MERV 1-inch filter. These often last 6–12 months depending on conditions.
Homes with pets or allergies: Consider MERV 11–13, provided the HVAC system is designed to handle it.
Avoid overly restrictive filters: Higher MERV is not always better. A filter that restricts too much airflow can increase static pressure, reduce comfort, freeze evaporator coils, and put additional strain on the blower motor.
Fiberglass filters: Inexpensive, but they mainly protect the equipment and provide limited air-quality improvement.

Our general recommendation: use the highest-quality filter your HVAC system can safely accommodate, with a properly sized 4-inch media filter being one of the best upgrades for improved filtration, airflow, and longer replacement intervals.

When you’re away from home, adjusting your thermostat can reduce energy use without making the house excessively hot or cold.

During summer, a good away setting is usually around 78–82°F. During winter, around 60–65°F is generally reasonable for an unoccupied home.

For Lowcountry homes, avoid turning the HVAC system completely off during hot, humid weather. The system still needs to run enough to control indoor humidity and moisture, helping reduce the risk of musty odors, condensation, and microbial growth.

If you have a smart thermostat, use Away, Vacation, or Eco Mode and program it to return to your normal comfort setting before you arrive home.
