Our winter snow storm has brought down a lot of trees and branches, which can end up clogging our city's storm drains. When you discover a clogged drain, your first instinct may be to reach for a bottle of liquid drain cleaner. But there are lots of reasons why you shouldn't - not the least of which are your pipes and your health!

Most liquid drain cleaners work by creating a chemical reaction inside your drain pipe. These reactions typically generate heat, which can do irreversible damage to the pipe itself.

If the pipe is plastic, the high heat could partially melt and deform the material. Metal pipes are more resilient, but the heat can weaken the metal in such a way that cracks and leaks become more likely down the line.

It's generally a good idea to seal off crawl space vents during the cold weather season. When the air is dry, as it is during the Winter, closing off your vents can reduce the chance that the pipes in the crawl space might freeze. Just be sure to open your vents in the Spring to allow outside air to circulate under the floor to prevent the moisture buildup that can lead to rot and mildew. In the event of freezing temperatures, it's always a good idea to know where your main water shut off valve is located. Generally speaking, most shutoff valves are located where the water line enters the house, either at the front of your house where you connect your hose, or basement near the hot water heater, or inside the garage. FIGHT THE FREEZE - PART 2 - Be sure to open the faucet and let any residual water drain out of the pipe. Draining the outside faucet is critical, because standing water between the inside shut-off valve and the outdoor faucet can freeze and break both the fixture and shut-off valve.
