Maintenance Tip: How to Upkeep Healthy Shrubbery
Shrubs do a lot more for your home than fill space in the yard. They help frame the property, add curb appeal, create privacy, and protect parts of the landscape from looking bare. But if they are ignored, they can get overgrown, patchy, diseased, or start crowding walkways, windows, and siding.
Here is how homeowners can keep shrubbery healthy and under control.
1. Trim at the right time
Do not just cut shrubs whenever they look messy. Some shrubs bloom on old growth, some on new growth, and cutting at the wrong time can mean fewer flowers or uneven growth.
A good rule: trim spring-flowering shrubs after they bloom. Trim summer-flowering shrubs in late winter or early spring before heavy growth starts.
2. Remove dead or damaged branches
Dead branches do not help the plant. They can attract pests, spread disease, and make the whole shrub look neglected. Cut them back cleanly so the plant can put energy into healthy growth.
3. Keep shrubs away from the house
Shrubs that grow too close to siding, windows, vents, or the foundation can trap moisture and limit airflow. That can lead to mildew, pest problems, and exterior damage over time.
Keep enough space between the plant and the building so air can move and maintenance crews can access the area when needed.
4. Water deeply, not constantly
Light watering every day usually does not do much. It encourages shallow roots. Shrubs do better with deeper watering less often, especially during hot, dry weather.
Deep roots make the plant stronger and better able to handle summer heat.
5. Mulch, but do not pile it against the trunk
Mulch helps hold moisture, control weeds, and protect roots. But piling mulch against the base of the shrub can trap moisture and cause rot.
Keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk or main stems.
6. Watch for pests and disease
Yellowing leaves, spots, webbing, chewed edges, or sudden dieback can be signs something is wrong. Catching problems early is a lot cheaper than replacing half the landscaping later.
Healthy shrubbery keeps your home looking cared for and helps protect the value of your property. A little upkeep during the season goes a long way.
