In 1955, Frederick Ward, a civil engineer, founded Frederick Ward Associates in Bel Air, Maryland. The firm provided land surveying services, supporting the growth and development of Harford County and surrounding areas over the following decades. Since then, Frederick Ward Associates has expanded its capabilities to include civil engineering, architecture, landscape architecture and environmental

planning. FWA has continually embraced new technologies, pioneering the use of GPS survey techniques in the 1990s, adopting drone mapping in the 2010s and utilizing the most recent advancements in 3D modeling software. Today, Frederick Ward Associates' architecture, civil engineering, planning and surveying services provide experience and expertise to private and public sector clients throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and beyond.

We are excited to see the transformation of the former Harford Mall site officially underway! Demolition has begun, marking the start of a new chapter for the property as it moves toward becoming Derby Place, a new mixed-use development in Bel Air.

FWA is proud to be part of this project and to play a role in helping our community continue to grow. Our team of civil engineers, surveyors, and landscape architects has been involved throughout the process, from surveying and entitlements to permitting, design, and construction.

We’re happy to see a project that we’ve spent so much time planning and designing, right here in our town, come to life. We’re looking forward to watching Derby Place take shape and seeing it become part of the community we’re proud to call home.

This week, we celebrate the legacy of land surveying, those who measure, map, and help shape our communities. Before any plan, permit, or project takes shape, surveyors are the ones who set the groundwork, literally, by defining where everything is and where it belongs.
Since our start in 1955 as a surveying firm, FWA has stayed true to the same precision and reliability that shaped our early days.
