New US Drought Monitor report released this morning shows some improvement for the District. This is the first time this year the District hasn't had some amount of Extreme or Exceptional drought conditions, and some areas show no drought conditions at all.

Recent rainfall is definitely helping. However, there remains some level of drought across much of the District, and we continue to encourage everyone to maintain their water conservation measures. The District's Modified Phase II Water Shortage Order remains in place through the end of the year.

⛈️STORM PREP TIPS-DON'T GET LEFT HIGH & DRY

With stormy weather approaching this weekend, now is a good time to prepare your home, family, and water well system.

🏡 BEFORE THE STORM:

💧 Stock up on water! Power outages can leave your well pump unable to supply water.

⚡ Protect your equipment! Lightning and power surges can damage well pumps and electrical components.

🔋 Have a backup plan! Make sure generators are properly sized and safely connected. NEVER operate a generator indoors or near windows and doors!

🔦 Charge up! Fully charge phones, flashlights, and backup battery packs.

🧊 Prepare your fridge and freezer! Freeze water bottles and ice packs to help keep food cold if the power goes out.

🏡 Secure outdoor items! Bring in loose furniture, decorations, and anything that could become airborne.

🚗 Fuel up! Fill your vehicles and have emergency supplies, medications, and pet necessities ready.

📻 Stay informed! Follow local weather alerts and emergency management updates.

🌧️ AFTER THE STORM – SAFETY FIRST!

Even after the storm passes, dangers can still be present. Stay alert and be mindful of your surroundings!

⚠️ Downed power lines: Always assume they're live! Stay far away and report them to your electric utility or 911.

⚠️ Damaged electrical equipment: Avoid exposed wiring, broken power poles, and flooded electrical components.

⚠️ Standing water: Stay clear of flooded areas, especially near electrical equipment.

⚠️ Well equipment: Check for visible damage only when safe. Never attempt electrical repairs yourself. If your well has flooded, don't use the water until it's been properly evaluated.

Storms can bring unexpected challenges, but a little preparation and looking out for one another can make a big difference.

Floridan Aquifer conditions vary depending on what part of the District you're in. Rainfall on the west side has helped spur recharge there, with some areas seeing groundwater levels above the 90th percentile. The eastern side still needs considerable rainfall as many wells are still showing below the 10th percentile.

Current Districtwide average is around the 29th percentile as of this week. Aquifer recharge is happening, albeit slowly, but more rainfall is needed over the next several months to restore normal groundwater levels Districtwide.

In the meantime, we continue to encourage everyone to implement water conservation measures. Drought conditions still persist throughout the District, and we remain under a Modified Phase II Water Shortage Order until the end of the year.
