In preparation of the upcoming freeze here are some important tips to remember:

1. Get Older Pipes Inspected

Temperature fluctuations can be hard on common pipe materials, which makes your house's pipes more vulnerable to cracks and leaks as the ground begins to freeze.

Have the plumbing system inspected regularly for problems that could get worse during the winter. This way, you can schedule a pipe replacement before it escalates to major damage. This really isn’t seasonal, just regular home maintenance!

2. Add Insulation

Pipes that are exposed to the cold air can be protected with insulation. Check around your house to find pipes in need of insulation - such as those in an unheated basement or crawlspace. Then, follow the instructions that come with the pipe insulation to apply it to each one.

3. Prepare Outdoor Spigots

Head to the exterior of your home and remove any water hoses that are attached to the outdoor spigots. Then, make sure to drain each line before covering the spigots with a foam faucet cover. If you see any exposed outdoor pipes, then also make sure that these are insulated. If you can’t find insulation pool noodles and towels wrapped can work, it’s better than nothing!

4. Keep Warm Air Circulating

Pipes that are hidden in cabinets are more vulnerable to freezing because they lack access to warmer air. Open up the cabinet doors during times when the temperatures are forecast to drop below freezing so that the warm air can help keep the pipes frost-free.

5. Seal Household Drafts

Cold air can also seep into your house and cause problem with the pipes. Feel around your house's doors and windows to search for drafts that could pose a problem with the plumbing. Then, make sure each draft is sealed by applying caulking or weather-stripping to the areas.

6. Leave Faucets Dripping Overnight

Burst pipes happen when water begins to freeze and expand in the pipe until enough pressure is generated to cause it to break. Leaving the faucet dripping helps to reduce pressure in the pipe so that it is less likely to freeze. Keep in mind that this only needs to be a slow drip so that you avoid running up your utility bills.

7. Prepare for Vacations

The winter season is a time when many families travel to see family for the holidays or just to enjoy a vacation somewhere warmer. While you can adjust the temperature slightly, make sure to leave your furnace running at a temperature above 55 degrees Fahrenheit so that the warm air can reach the pipes.

If you will be leaving for an extended period of time, then you can drain the lines and shut off the water at the main valve. Alternatively, you could arrange for a friend or neighbor to check your house's plumbing periodically to make sure a pipe does not freeze or break while you are gone.
8. Know How to Handle a Frozen Pipe

Occasionally, you may forget one of these steps and find yourself with a frozen pipe. When this happens, consult with a plumber to find the best strategy for defrosting the pipe without causing damage. (504)645-0373

You should always avoid DIY methods that can cause personal injuries or burn through the pipe. However, you might be able to warm a frozen pipe with a hair dryer or wait for it to thaw on its own!

9. Identify the Shut-Off Valve

Should a burst pipe occur, you may find water flooding into your living space. Teach each person in your home where the main shut-off valve is and how to use it. This way, you can protect your property from water damage while you wait for the emergency plumbing services to arrive.
