I don’t post on here much, I usually get the jobs done and move onto the next one. It was a busy summer.
Here is an interesting retrofit that I completed this summer in an old house. The evaporator coil on the AC had sprung multiple leaks. Being an R 22 system (stopped manufacturing in 2020) repairing the old system would not have been a good investment or even possible. The AC system was also tied to a very old standing pilot furnace that was oversized, poorly installed, and inefficient. I offered the customer two options. The best being total system replacement, and the other being just the AC replacement which was not recommended in this case with a nearly 50 year old furnace. I was also able to re-orientate the system to where it is more efficient to service and work on. It was a major upgrade in so many ways. It was a cleaner installation (I did my best with the mess I had to work with), more efficient, comfortable, reliable. Also a 10 year manufacturer parts warranty is nice. All for a reasonable price. Not to mention when I uninstalled the old furnace I discovered decades of bird f***s blocking 90% of the exhaust vent for the furnace and water heater, this is a major safety hazard!! If the customer did not have us replace it, who knows when it would’ve been found or if it would’ve been too late... This old furnace did not have the safety features a new furnace has. Even if I didn’t find the blockage, a new furnace would disengage the pressure switch or overheat and continuously trip the limit switch. The old standing pilot furnace didn’t care. It continued to vent the carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide into the basement.. Scary stuff, always have a carbon monoxide detector in your house!!
