The Redcoats are coming!…
It seemed fitting on coronation day(although frankly I paid WAY more attention to the derby) to post this line up of vivid red tulips.
The photos were taken April 21 and by now they are fading quickly.
This is one my favorite bulb plantings that I do with one of my clients, we dig a ditch and ‘line ‘em up’ bulb to bulb. The bed had a lot of clay so we treat them as annuals and will replant next fall.

Excuse me a moment while I geek out over some of the amazing specimen plants in the Hamilton Hort Court at the PHS FlowerShow. The specimen exhibitors brought out some of their finest horticultural treasures in celebration of the show being back inside.
I always wonder up and down every aisle checking out the insane variety of plants that are represented in the individual plant classes. Bravo!

Many have ask if we received any awards at this year’s Flower Show and yes, we were honored with three special awards.
A Silver Medal in the Landscape group (based on points).

The Kate and Robert Bartlett Award for Best use of trees in a landscape.

And a Special Achievement Award of excellence for an exhibit 1,000SF & over in the category of Conservation from the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania

It’s time to highlight one of the star plants of this year’s exhibit, it has stopped diehard plant geeks and novices alike….

Camassia leichtlinii, often called Leichtlin’s Camass or great camass, has dazzled everyone with its clear blue star shaped flowers and when used en mass, the flowers create a blue cloud that floats around the edge of the pond.
Camassia leichtlinii is a native bulb of western North America including northern CA, OR, WA, NV and extending into British Columbia, Canada.
Interestingly the bulb was used as a food source by Native American tribes.
Hardy in zones 5-9.
Camass prefers full to partial sun and goes best in fertile moist acidic humusy soils and prefers to be left undisturbed once established. Camass needs regular moisture during spring growth and bloom but will tolerate drier conditions as it moves towards dormancy.
No serious insect or disease issues and is deer and rodent resistant.
This bulb has become a personal favorite and I highly recommend it as an addition to the garden.

It’s that time of year and we’re a little behind on sharing progress so there will be a little of a photo/post dump from the first two days of set-up.
Please allow us to introduce you to Laurel-Brook’s 2023 PHS Philadelphia Flower Show exhibit.

They’ve been just waiting for a day like this!….
I have no idea what cultivar this is, they came to the garden in a little brown paper bag as a thank you gift. As it turned out about half of the bulbs bloom mid-winter, even Christmas, if the temperatures are mild enough here in central PA. While I doubt that I’ll ever be a true Galanthophile like the one and only David Culp
I dearly love the intrepid spirit of the Galanthus genus and their ability to brave the cold and herald the slow but gradual arrival of spring.

Poppies…carefree, easy, and I they’re part of my ‘happy’ flowers list.
These pictures today are Papaver somniferum, Bread Seed Poppies.
The two colors here are; Lauren’s Grape and Hungarian Blue.
I don’t specifically plant poppies anywhere, I scatter seed here and there and they take care of the rest. Plus they happily reseed throughout the garden. The seedlings resemble tiny lettuce plants with a same gray green color of the mature plant.
Bread poppies are annuals that reach 24-36” tall, they’re very attractive to pollinators, and are deer and drought resistant.
The seeds have a beautiful gray blue color and are a favorite for use in breads, cakes, and cookies.
