Which Turfgrass Species Is Right For Your Lawn?
Growing up, I quickly became enamored with turfgrass. Whether admiring the beautiful striping designs present on MLB stadiums across the nation or working within my father’s landscape business, I have always been drawn to beautiful, lush stands of turfgrass. Personally, I believe the cornerstone of the traditional landscape is turfgrass. There’s nothing like witnessing the vibrant, stunning aesthetic value of a dense, healthy turf stand. So, as a homeowner, many ponder, how can I transform my lawn into a picturesque stand reminiscent of a portrait from Southern Living Magazine? This is a loaded question that cannot be answered with a simple quick reply. However, the single, most important factor to consider if you desire a beautiful turf stand is turfgrass selection.
As with anything in life, there are many different types and versions of turfgrass species. The growing list of new turfgrass cultivars continues to grow and it can definitely seem a daunting task to the average homeowner. However, using the K-I-S-S method can transform turfgrass selection into a very practical decision. The first principle with turfgrass selection is understanding turfgrasses are arranged into two main classifications: warm - season and cool - season.
Warm - season turfgrass species generally perform best in warmer temperatures and thrive from late spring to early fall. These turfgrasses also experience a dormancy period in the winter and early spring seasons where they turn a golden brown and do not actively grow. If you desire green turf year - round, you will have to overseed these lawns with a cool - season turfgrass species such as Annual Ryegrass. Popular warm - season turfgrasses that thrive in the Upstate are Bermudagrass, Zoysiagrass and Centipedegrass.
Contrastingly, cool - season turfgrass species generally perform best in cooler temperatures and thrive in the mid fall until late spring. While cool - season grasses can grow successfully during the extreme summer months, these grasses require extra care and maintenance. Also, these turfgrasses typically require reseeding in the early fall to reinvigorate the stand after the harsh summer months. Popular cool - season turfgrass species in the Upstate are Tall Fescue, Fine Fescue, Annual Ryegrass and Perennial Ryegrass.
Aside from considering the temperature, the amount of sunlight, or the lack thereof on your residence plays a large role in turfgrass selection. The vast majority of all turfgrass species thrive in full sun conditions. Full sun conditions refer to plants receiving at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. However, things can become slightly trickier when cultivating turfgrass in shaded areas. Whether selecting warm - season or cool - season turfgrasses for the Upstate, the following turfgrass species exhibit partial shade tolerance: Zoysiagrass, Tall Fescue, Fine Fescue, Annual Ryegrass and Perennial Ryegrass.
There are other factors to consider when selecting turfgrasses such as installation method, price, and soil type. Nonetheless, always start with the temperature range and amount of sunlight when determining which turfgrass species will best suit your home landscape.
