Native Creations Landscape Services, Inc.

Native Creations Landscape Services, Inc. We are a residential and commercial landscape company dedicated to promoting the use of native plants in PA landscapes.

We have spent years working to control invasive plant species throughout Pennsylvania and observing the effect these plants can have on the ecosystem as a whole, With over a decade of experience working primarily with native trees, shrubs, and flora; plants naturally found throughout the landscapes of Pennsylvania, and the implementation of thousands of acres of reforested natural landscapes, Nati

ve Creations has created a niche in the landscape industry dedicated to bringing native plants into residential, commercial and conservation projects creating a better, natural landscape for the customer and neighboring ecosystems. Native plants are plants indigenous to a given area in geologic time. This includes plants that have developed, occur naturally, or existed for many years in an area (trees, flowers, grasses, and other plants). Many of the invasive plant species found in natural areas are "escapees" from nearby landscapes. Commonly used exotic, ornamental, or non-native plants have a tendency to spread / escape into the wild. Since these plants are not part of our existing landscape, they tend not to have any form of natural control, thus, taking over areas once occupied by native plants. This displaces wildlife and insects which once thrived on the existing plants. The more non-native plants that move into a natural area, the more it hinders the function of the ecosystem. Planting native stock has many benefits to the customer also:
-Require less to no fertilization
-Easy Care
-Acclimated to our climate zone / already existing in our zones
-Pest and disease resistant
-Greater success rate
-Many species are browse tolerant
-Great selection of seasonal colors
-Multi-functional landscapes
-Many Native Plants are hypo-allergenic

Proper equipment and site preparation are very important components that lead to the success of a pollinator meadow. When seeding a meadow, many factors are considered— such as the seed mix, soil/site conditions, and invasive species pressure.

Meadow Feature: Orange Street, Berwick, PA

🚜 Meadow was installed Fall of 2021
🌳 2 acres pollinator meadow, 1.5 acres tree/shrub establishment

This project was proposed by Native Creations to reduce turf/mowing demands and create an outdoor learning space. This space is multifunctional, and also serves as a means of managing stormwater and runoff. This allows the Berwick Borough to apply this area toward MS4 requirements.

This project invoked much attention—both good and bad— with many remarks from those who opposed the “messy” appearance of native plants.

Ultimately, the Orange Street project helped us build connections with school facilities and within the community. This project has had many impacts, leading to 50+ acres of local meadows being planted.

Every project presents an opportunity to connect community with nature.🌿

Earlier this month, the team installed 280 native trees and shrubs on a hillside in Montour County. The goal of this project was to decrease mowing, stabilize the ground, and restore habitat.

While planting, we came across an Eastern Box Turtle! 🐢
Box turtles depend on native plants and specific habitat for survival. The leading cause of population decline is the loss of habitat. By planting native trees and shrubs and reducing mowed lawn, we can help restore the native habitat that allows wildlife to thrive.

Every time we encounter wildlife on the job, we are reminded of why this work is so important 🌱

Today, May 20, we’re celebrating Pennsylvania Native Species Day and World Bee Day 🐝🌾

Native plants play a vital role in supporting pollinators— like bees, butterflies, and other wildlife.

Planting native trees, flowers, and shrubs helps to create healthier habitats for the pollinators in our communities. 🌼

The importance of site prep 🌱

When installing a new project, the brown, “dead” ground is actually a great sign— this means that the site prep was effective.
By reducing invasive species and controlling competition, this gives the newly planted trees and meadow seed a chance to thrive.
Successful restoration doesn’t happen overnight, it’s built in stages, with prep work being one of the most important. 🌳🌾

Protecting your trees and shrubs is an important part of any new planting project. 🌳

Last week, the team installed 280 native trees and shrubs on a hillside in Montour County. To support long-term success, tree guards and shrub cages were installed at the time of planting. These protections help reduce wildlife damage, simplify maintenance, and encourage healthy vertical growth.

Although the shrub fencing stands just 4 feet tall, deer are less likely to jump into the small enclosed spaces. 🦌🌳

🌳Tree ID Tuesday: Eastern Redbud

The Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis) is a small tree native to eastern North America, and its blooms are on full display right now! 🌸 It’s easy to identify by its pink/purple flowers— and later in the season— it’s heart shaped leaves.

Commonly found along forest edges, roadsides, and landscapes, redbuds provide an important early nectar source for pollinators. 🐝

🌎🌱 Earth Day is a great reminder that stewardship is an active role we all play. By planting native and caring for the land thoughtfully, we support healthier ecosystems that can thrive for years to come.
