Over the next few days as it gets colder outside to help prevent your pipes from freezing or freezing and breaking make sure and keep some water running in one of your sinks overnight. Due to the fact that is much harder for water to freeze while it is running vs. Just setting idle in your pipes. That does not mean that you have to keep your faucet wide open and running . Just a even slow stream of water. It makes more sense to run cold water versus hot due to the fact it is not as hard on the wallet. This is just a reminder brought to you from Olympic Plumbing and Sewer. If you have any questions on this issue or any other plumbing issue feel free to give us a call at anytime. This month's helpful hint will be on hot water tanks. 1 of the most frequent questions asked is how to get longevity out of your hot water tank. One of the best ways to get longevity out of your hot water tank is by flushing the tank. This is something as a homeowner you can do it yourself, first thing you have to do is locate the cold water shut off on the top of your tank, if there is one there. By shutting off the cold water it stops water from coming into the tank. Once you have located the cold water shut off close the valve off. then simply go to the very bottom of the tank and you will find a drain valve. By opening up the drain valve at the bottom of the tank, by opening that valve will allow sediment to come out of the bottom of the tank.flushing the sediment out of the bottom of the tank will make your hot water tank heat up and run more efficiently. And will also stops the sediment from traveling through the hot water pipe and clogging fixtures. So basically becoming a 2 for 1 . we hope these helpful hints help you with your Plumbing Needs . This is are helpful Plumbing hint for the month . it is based on our most frequently asked questions. This month is the best way to maintain drains. One of the very best way to maintain a Drain like your Kitchen Sink Bathroom Sink, Bathtubs, Laundry tub sink. As most of you at one time has tryed Drano, Liquid-Plumber and different drain cleaners on the market to realize that they do not work. once a drain is Blocked the only thing that can be done is Rodd the drain. either by Rodding it yourself or by calling a Plumber. Dain Cleaners does your drains no good at all it can either make it worst or cause the drain to leak . One of the best things to do to keep your all ready open drain maintained is by using ( White Vinegar & Baking Soda) Take a quart of white vinegar put it small pot heat it up to just about a boil , and 1 cup of baking soda . pour the baking soda in the drain followed up by pouring the vinegar on top of it .DO NOT MIX IT TOGETTHER !!! do this at bed time so it has time to set all night . when you get up in the morning run hot water for a few minutes. by doing this once a mounth it will help from grease forming in your drains . Grease is caused by soap and detergent. by using White Vinegar & Baking Soda it is all natural . and will not harm your drains like chemicals. We hope this helpful hint will help you keep your drains running clean and free. If you ever have any questions always feel free to call us at any time. Helpful hint . This time of year as spring approaches, some people might notices a sewer smell in the basement . most of the time it is caused by stagnant water in the floor drains in your basement. The best way to address this issue is by pouring a bucket of freshwater in each floor drain . I have attached a Pic of a floor drain in this post for those who does not know what a floor drain is . When i say fresh water , that is just what i mean freshwater , most people want to add bleach to the water which will intensify the smell of stagnant water. Hopefully you find this hint helpful.
