Very important Emergency freeze actions:
1- Quote Mike “change your air filters for the love of God!”
If you are snowed, or iced in, and do not have replacements:
Remove filters and take them out bang them off.
(If it is too icy to step outside, shake them off inside a closed shower to contain dust.)
Get as much dust and debris off of all of your filters as you can- then replace them.
Do not wash filters if they are not washable filters.
NEVER put wet filters back on; always allow them to dry before replacing them!
Why? Dirty or wet filters restrict air flow and will over heat your blower motor.
If your blower motor overheats it will shut down your whole HVAC system!
2- Keep your cold water dripping!
YOU DO NOT WANT FROZEN AND BURST PIPES!
3- Open cabinet doors around sinks, dishwasher, and washing machine to let heat into the walls behind them.
Keep checking areas with little used waterlines - such as rarely used bathrooms, and laundry room - to make sure water is still flowing to them.
If water is not flowing get heat to that area ASAP to unthaw your pipes!
4- Before the freeze hits : Wrap your outdoor faucets, even if it’s just with an old towel and duct tape!
5- Heat tape, insulate, or put a safe heater near any exposed or barely insulated pipes in your garage.
Added note: If you have unused portions of your house that you keep closed and unheated, you might want to consider heating those!
There may be pipes in the walls or an outside faucet near them that the heat can help 🙂
Why? See reason #2
A larger heating bill is a small cost pay compared to the price of replacing broken pipes!
6- KEEP COUNTING YOUR BLESSINGS AND KEEP WARM 🙂
