There’s something I’ve always liked about ceiling beams. Whether they are stained, distressed, painted, traditional, or even formal… I like them all. Gives a room some atmosphere and can change with the design.

I have built and installed all of these types over the years & even a few foam beams along the way. I have used a few different installation techniques too. That usually gets determined once I get everything laid out for that specific project since no application is usually the same.

Once I figured out what I wanted to do on this install, which is my personal home, the first thing I did was to install 1/2” cdx ply for a solid nailer. This was quicker instead of laying out blocking in between all of the ceiling joist. I will also be installing a Chamclad soffit panel on the rest of ceiling area.

I wanted a decent sized beam as to fit the scale of the room. The beam dimensions are approximately 8”w x 12” t. Since they are a taller beam, I thought I needed to have a framework to help with lateral stability. I used a 3/4” cd ply for the base and also the support brackets. Pocket hole screws and some wood glue worked like a champ to fasten into the base. Make sure to plumb and scribe each bracket which I spaced them 2’ on c.

I decided the beams needed a little flair, so I opted to recess the bottom board leaving about 1/2” reveal. The best way to achieve that (IMO) is by cutting a dado.

I set my laser level up to an approximately 1/4” lower than the height of my beam. This gives me some flexibility if there is any discrepancy in the framing. Each side panel was fastened using finish nails once the bottom side lined up with the laser & be sure to scribe the end of the beam to fit the wall precisely.

- [ ] I built the bottom panel in one pc, which was nearly 27’ long. It did take a little work to get it started in one of the dados, but once we snuck it in there the other side pushed right in. I used a bar clamp to make sure that the bottom board was pushed into the dados at the correct depth. Added a few finish nails into the brackets and we were good to go! Now it’s time to paint!
